OUTLINE

DEFINITION

-an outline is a plan for or a summary of


a writing project or speech.
-is usually in the form of a list divided into
headings and subheadings that distinguish
main points from supporting points.
TYPES OF OUTLINES

• Topic outlines
• Sentence outlines
Both types are hierarchical outlines but a
topic outline is far more brief.
A topic outline provides a quick overview of topics
to be included in an essay.
PURPOSE OF THE OUTLINE

• It can quickly cover the main ideas (Topic Outline) or


become a detailed, in-depth undertaking
(Sentence Outline).
• The purpose of an outline is to help organize a paper
by checking to see if and how ideas connect to each
other, or whether some points need more support.

STRUCTURE OF A FULL-
SENTENCE OUTLINE:

• Each roman numeral (I, II, III, IV…) indicates the start of a
new paragraph. ...

• Each Arabic numeral (1, 2, 3, 4…) indicates
a sentence or piece of supporting evidence for each
main point.
