INTRODUCTION

• The word paper derives from the Greek term for the
ancient writing material called ‘papyrus’.
• Paper making is considered as one of the Four Great
Inventions of Ancient China.
• The first water-powered paper mills built and
mechanized in China in 13th century..
• Consumable material , can be recycled & used for
various purposes.
Cultivation of banana
Banana is an important fruit crop belonging to the
genus musa.
It grows in wild and also cultivated on large scale as
field crop as well as backyard crop in households.
It is cultivated in about 1,86,000 hectare of land.
Luxuriant growth in rich well drained soil.
Pseudo stem portion contains fibre suitable for
making ropes and twines.
WHAT EXACTLY IS GREASE PROOF PAPER
AND WHERE IS IT USED??
Greaseproof paper is a type of non-
absorbent paper that is impermeable to
oil or grease.
Mainly used in kitchen for various
purposes like layering fragile foods,
wrapping food for storage and for lining
cake tins.
Used to make jam pot covers & lids and
for separating food into individual
portions for freezing.
RAW MATERIALS USED FOR

MANUFACTURING OF PAPER
Different types of raw-materials used:
 Fibrous raw materials
 Paper pulp:-ground wood, bleached and unbleached
sulfite and sulfate, semi chemical pulps.
 Reuse pulp:-paper products such as newspapers and
paperboard.
 Non-fibrous raw materials
 Inorganic raw materials:- clay, talc, titanium dioxide,
zinc sulfide, calcium carbonate etc.
 Organic raw materials:-rosin, glue, waxes, glycerol,
dyestuffs etc.
DEMERITS OF
CONVENTIONAL RAW
MATERIALS
With alternative fibers, its difficult to remove the water
during papermaking, creating large cost disadvantage
Tree-based paper machines not able to efficiently drain
water out of tree free fibers.
High effluent output.
 Small opportunity to use residual fibers because
papermaking facilities are often far from sources of
agricultural residuals.
WHY BANANA PULP???
 Is 300 times stronger than pulped paper.
 It is water-resistant, grease-proof, fully bio-degradable
and environment friendly.
 Made using what is currently a waste product.
 There are no additives, chemicals, glues, dyes used in its
production.
 Water is not used either as trees contain enough of their
own sap to re-bond.
 In India, banana is cultivated in about 1,86,000 hectare of
land and also there is a plentiful agricultural waste in
India.
HOW DOES A PAPER QUALIFY FOR ECO-
FRIENDLY MANUFACTURING PROCESS??
When it does not deplete the forest cover,
When it makes use of waste agricultural residues.
When there are no toxic effluents from the process.
When it does not deplete limited quantity of natural
resource,
 Less dependent on external energy inputs.
 Allows blending with wood fibres for making paper of
better quality at low cost.
HOW IS GREASE PROOF
PAPER MANUFACTURED???
 The sheath is manually removed ,washed with fresh cold
water & crushed in a three-roll crusher.
 The air dried crushed sheath material is taken in stainless
steel vessel and digested under pressure free condition.
 Bleaching is done by single stage hypochlorite treatment
using calcium hypochlorite solution.
 Semi-bleached pulps obtained from banana sheath is beaten in
a laboratory valley beater to different degrees of freeness.
 The sheets are then dried in oven and kept in PVC bags for
subsequent study.

RESULTS
 On the basis of the experiment conducted, the hemi
cellulose content was the highest for the musa
paradisica species of the banana plant.
Banana pulp shows greaseproof properties at certain
freeness and certain beating time.
 Banana pulp incorporated with bamboo pulp in the
ratio of 80:20 beaten at certain freeness, imparts good
physical strength.
CONCLUSION

From the study it can be concluded that :

1. Banana (musa paradisica L.) fibre may be the
potential raw material for making grease proof
paper .

2. Produces a good quality greaseproof paper with all

the desired properties.

3. The properties can further be enhanced by

incorporating 20% bamboo pulp to banana pulp.
