WHAT IS ADVOCACY?
It is an act of persuading people to adhere to a belief they may
not have held before.
It is a process of inducement to adopt, support, defend or
maintain a cause.
It involves organization of information into arguments and using
these arguments to persuade an audience to take action.
WHAT IS SOCIAL MOBILIZATION?
It is a collective action to implement what people have been
convinced about and persuaded to do.
It is getting people to plan, organize and implement a course of
action.
Legal marketing
Because the end results of advocacy are policies (including
laws) there is still a need to popularize these. This enables
the officials and the general public to become aware of
these policies and ensures that they are implemented and
followed. This process of popularizing policies and laws is
referred to as legal marketing.

STARFISH
While walking along the beach, a man saw someone in the distance
leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.
As he came closer, he saw thousands of starfish the tide had
thrown onto the beach. Unable to return to the ocean during low tide,
the starfish were dying. He observed a young man picking up the
starfish one by one and throwing them back into the water.
After watching the seemingly futile effort, the observer said,
“There must be thousands of starfish on this beach. It would be
impossible for you to get all of them. There are simply too many. You
can’t possibly save enough to make a difference.
The young man smiled as he continued to pick up another starfish
and toss it back into the ocean. “It made a difference to that one”, he
replied.
