Introduction

COMPOSITES
A composite material is a material made from two or more
constituent materials with significantly different physical or
chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material with
characteristics different from the individual components.

Matrix Phase
 The primary phase, having a continuous character, is called
matrix. Matrix is usually more ductile and less hard phase.
It holds the dispersed phase and shares a load with it.
 Matrix phase maybe Metal, Ceramic and Polymer
 The second phase which is embedded in the matrix is calles
dispersed phase. Dispersed phase is usually stronger than
the matrix, therefore it is called reinforcing phase.
Metal Matrix Composite
Introduction
A metal matrix composite (MMC) is composite material with at
least two constituent parts, one being a metal necessarily, the other
material may be a different metal or another material, such as a
ceramic or organic compound.
Why use MMC?
 High strength
 High stiffness
 Toughness
 Density
 Good wear resistance
 Damping capacity
 Specific modulus

Application of MMC
In Space
There are very few commercial applications of MMCs at the present time.
MMCs have potential for use in aircraft structures, aircraft engines, and
naval weapons systems.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Hubble
Space Telescope uses two antenna masts made of aluminum reinforced
with P-100 pitch-based graphite fibers.

Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages Disadvantages
 Low coefficient for thermal  Some fabrication process are
expansion complex and expensive
 Fire resistance  High cost of some reinforcing
 Higher transverse stiffness, fiber
strength & modulus  Relative immature
 Better radiation resistance technology
 High electrical and thermal  Machining difficult
conductivity  Fiber matrix interactions at
high temperature degrade

Application areas of CMC
High Temperature Materials
Many ceramics retain a high proportion of their strength at temperatures
well in excess of 1200 C, and hence might be expected to provide useful
high-temperature materials.
Ballastic protection materials
Conventional steel armour are heavy weight and using some alternatives
like Al alloys may not provide required ballastic protection.
CMC can be used in such applications.
Examples of CMC in use:
1.Cutting Tools 2. Aerospace

3.Jet Engine 4. Burner
