REDUCTION OF ALDEHYDE AND
KETONES
1). REDUCTION BY HYDRIDE
TRANSFER
REAGENTS : reduction of aldehyde to primary
alcohol and ketones to secondary alcohols
is normally easy to accomplish by sodium
boro hydride or lithium aluminium hydride
(powerful reagent used in ether solutions
)lithium aluminium hydride reduces a wide
range of functional groups e.g.: COOH,COOR
,CN , CONH2 and epoxies. This reagent is
inconvenient to use when comes in contact
with water or alcohol it may cause fire.
