7 STAGES OF CRISIS

INTERVENTION
STAGE 1 : Psychosocial Assessment

Assessment leads to gathering of baseline data with respect to the crisis situation that is experienced by the person. It
should be emphasized that in this stage, the Behavioral Health, coping mechanisms used, and risk of suicide are
determined.

STAGE 2 : Build Rapport

To further help the crisis worker get relevant information, it is important to build rapport such that the person
experiencing the crisis will realize that there is genuineness in the kind of help being extended by the crisis worker.

STAGE 3 : Know The Cause Of The Crisis

This is the stage where the crisis worker would like to know what made the client to ask him for help. It is also
important to elucidate what coping methods were used and how these methods fail to address the crisis situation being
experienced by the client.
STAGE 4 : Dealing With Emotions

At this point, the skills of the crisis worker in terms of active listening and the use of challenging responses
are put to use. Here, the crisis worker must be prepared to listen and reflect on the feelings which are being
vented out by the client.

STAGE 5 : Find Alternative Solution

clients. It is at this point where different options are laid on the table and each one is discussed in order that
the pros and cons are checked.
STAGE 6 : Action Plan

This action plan implementation stage is important so that the client can be assisted in ways to better handle the crisis
that he is facing. Cognitive and behavioral responses with regards to the crisis need to be set out in the action plan.

STAGE 7 : Follow-up

A holistic approach in evaluating how far the client is able to progress from the crisis needs to be done at this point in
time. Thus, regular follow-up of the progress the client is making is essential.
