ORGANIZATION AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS TO PHILIPPINE
DEMOCRACY; AND
• DISCUUS THE RULE OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATION AND
SOCIAL MOVEMENTS.
CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS

Civil society organizations are basically non


government members of the society that promote
the interest of the public. They are known to
champion issues of the marginalize members of the
society, such as issues on human rights, labor rights,
environmental protection.
• Rejuvenation of democracy started by French revolution during
18th century.
• The crucial rule of civil society and how they shape politics
where given emphasis during 20th century.
• The advent of liberal democracy promulgated by the Americans
during this time also help in stressing the importance of the
people and by extension, civil society (Bonnell and Hunt 2007).
SOCIAL MOVEMENT
Social movement was define by Mario Diani as “a distinct social progress,
consisting of the mechanisms through which actors engaged in collective
action” (della Porta and Diani 2006). The three main characteristics of social
movements including:
1. They are involve some kind of conflict (cultural or political) with another
identified opponent promote oppose social change.
2. The group is made of “dense informal networks” wherein rules are not
standardize but are constantly negotiated by the actors.
3. The member share the sense of collective identity wherein they develop a
common connection and shared purpose on their action.
