General Description of Lawang
Sewu , Semarang-Indonesia
Lawang Sewu is from javanese language which mean "Thousand Doors"
is a landmark in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, built as the
headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. The Architect
of Lawang Sewu is Cosman Citroen.

The complex consists of several buildings, two main building named A


and B and two smaller building than A and B, named C and D. Lawang
sewu located in Pemuda Street.
The Planning of Lawang
Sewu Design
The building plan resembles the letter L, there is a courtyard behind the building. At the
southeastern edge of the courtyard there are printing buildings, engine rooms and bicycle halls.

Referring to Indies architectural design, the building is missing front and rear hallways to
guard buildings from direct sunlight. In the middle of the building also stretched a hallway again. Beside
to connecting the space, the central hallway serves to cool the temperature inside the building.In the air
circulation system of this building, the reception room serves as an air chimney to channel the hot air
out.

The roof was designed to be waterproof and make the space on the roof stay cool. Keeping
the space under the roof remained dry and cool is important because the archival documents are stored
here. The double roof was create on the top of office, as the inner roof under the outer roof.
Development Process of
Lawang Sewu, Semarang
The first stone is laying on February 27, 1904 begins with a ceremony
salvation. Guard’s House and Printing office were built first, and used to be NIS
Office while construction is underway. Construction of the main building waiting
improvement of soil structure. The soil at the site after the test was not capable of
supporting the building as big and heavy as that. The soil should be improved by
digging up to 4 meters and replace it with a layer of volcanic sand. This process was
taken a long time and costly. During the construction period, every day was done
by 300 workers. On July 1, 1907, the NIS office was finished. Without the
inauguration ceremony, the building was soon used.

Building A
Building A is the main building of the NIS office.
The three-storey building with "L" configuration looks
like a kite with the main entrance at the corner of the
wing's second encounter. The roof is a spacious
balcony that is connected directly to the main public
building. Vestibule on the ground floor designed to
be very interesting with stained glass doors, floors
and marble walls. Building A is currently used of
exhibition place and become a tourist attraction.
Building B

Building B is an extension of the


building A, consists of two main floors and
one floor roof space. Building B is different
from a building because it uses a system of
reinforced concrete structures. The
building style is simple with style of the era
2nd decade of XX century.
Buildig C

Building C consists of 2 floors, the first


floor serves as a first print the ticket and NIS
train schedules. The building orientation to
west. On the southeast side, there are
additional buildings that are used for audio-
visual space.
Building D

Building D is a building with one floor. There


are six poles, two from six poles are fused with
walls. Distance between the poles is 3.16 m.
Interesting thing from the pole is the head pole
with the form of zigurat upside down and
between the pole there are walls and windows.
Building E

Building E is located side by side with building A and B. This one floor building has
an area of 135 m², a saddle-roof with a tile cover, with doors and windows that
have wooden jalusi. Building E is planned as a gallery and KAI office.

Pump House

The pump house plan is octagon-shaped. Each side has two windows, except the
door where located on the east side. The shape of the roof conical follows its field
with a ball-shaped peak.

Stained glass as the main attraction lawang sewu

This stained glass is made in J.L schouten studio


in delft. if we observe this stained glass, will be seen
various symbols with an implied message. These
symbols include the symbol of Batavia and Semarang
city as the main city of the island of Java, and the
symbol of the city of Amsterdam.
On one glass segment, there are two female figures who are
the personification of the goddess fortuna (goddess of
fortune), goddess of venus (goddess of love), flanking the
wheel of winged wagon (symbol of N.I.S.M company). The
message of this stained glass is that both goddesses have
league to Hindia-Dutch to give glory to rail transport.

called lawang sewu. To make the air circulation
in the room stay well, then the Lawang sewu
was design has many blinds door.
Lawang sewu has an attic. Ancient
times used as archive space. The roof is
made waterproof and kept cool. In
order for the room to stay cool and dry
then made a double roof and tower
vents to keep the air flow smoothly.
Attic of lawang sewu is big enough,
even be used to play badminton.
Conclusion

As a historic building,lawang sewu should be


kept maintained. Every a week or once a month
held exhibitions or performances in lawang sewu
to attract guest and lawang sewu still crowded
visited. In addition, rumors are created that
lawang sewu haunted should be removed
immediately by making the building lawang sewu
to be interesting to visit.
