INTRODUCTION
• Burt’s Bees was founded by Roxanne Quimby and Burt Shavitz in
1984, headquartered in Durham, North Carolina.
• Leading manufacturer of environmentally friendly natural personal
care products.
• Burt’s Bees products can be found all over the place, from large
nationwide chains to corner grocery shops.
• Due to the organization’s greater size and complexity, employees have
to be given more structured jobs in order for work to be done
properly and efficiently.
• Burt’s Bees managers could not possibly design a customized job for
every one of their employees that would keep them all optimally
engaged, motivated, and satisfied.
MINDY (Customer Care Representative)
• Mindy likes to face new challenges every day but her formal job
design does not lodge her characteristics.
• She is ready to move on to something different a change or
something additional to broaden her experiences.
• She is detailed enough to pay attention to the little minor things.
• She has a repetitive kind job consisting of taking orders and dealing
with routine customer concerns over the phone.
• She tries to make small projects additional to her usual work and
volunteers to tackle new challenges.
ANDY (Maintenance Technician)
• Andy seeks constant improvement.
• He always tries to improve the existing conditions and crave to
explore new possibilities.
• Andy deeply cares for the environment, which is one of the primary
reasons why he applied for a job at Burt’s Bees.
• He would be more engaged and satisfied working as a Process
Engineer, rather than a Maintenance Technician.
• He suspected that some of the manufacturing procedures could be
improved to reduce wasted energy.
JAKE- (Compounding Department Employee)

• Jake who is a social person and loves to communicate with people.

• His role is to follow recipes to mix bulk ingredients which is an
independent job and does not require any communication with
others.
• He maintains relationships with assembling employees and learns
much more about the equipment.
Karen- (Brand Manager)

• Karen is a creative person.

• She is unable to find creative side of marketing through analytical
works in which she is not so good.
• She has managed to craft her job to include more creative thinking.
• She constantly reminds herself how her more unpleasant tasks fit into
larger purpose of her job.
PROBLEMS/CHALLENGES
• Burt’s Bees on being a great and diverse platform to work had to face
some challenges as it being such a great organization, had to create
structured jobs for their employees.
• Due to complexity, managers within the organization could not design
a customized job for every single employee that would keep them
optimally engaged and motivated.
• As a result, many employees were left with formal kind of jobs which
had a negative impact on their behaviour.
• Their job profile had a similar kind of routine work which felt like a
boredom to them and as a result they tried to indulge themselves in
some other tasks.
• The employees were not been provided with much opportunities by
their organization to showcase their capabilities.
• The employees never felt motivated nor satisfied with the tasks been
assigned to them from their supervisors.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Organization should plan specific strategies to enhance career growth
of their employees.
• Mindy’s job design does not accommodate any new challenges at
work as Mindy likes to take challenging job role, she should be
assigned with a challenging role.
• Andy, who seeks constant improvement should be promoted to the
processing department as he proved to be productive.
• Jake is a people person and his skills at dealing with customers would
be fit for Customer Care Representative.
• Karen should be given creative role in the marketing field which
doesn’t involve analytical tasks.
