CASE STUDY

THE PROBLEM:
Satish was a Sales Manager for Industrial Products Company in City branch. A week ago, he was promoted
and shifted to Head Office as Deputy Manager - Product Management for a division of products which he
was not very familiar with. Three days ago, the company VP - Mr. George, convened a meeting of all
Product Managers. Satish's new boss (Product Manager Ketan) was not able to attend due to some other
preoccupation. Hence, the Marketing Director, Preet - asked Satish to attend the meeting as this would
give him an exposure into his new role.
At the beginning of the meeting, Preet introduced Satish very briefly to the VP. The meeting started with
an address from the VP and soon it got into a series of questions from him to every Product Manager.
George, of course, was pretty thorough with every single product of the company and he was known to be
pushy and a blunt veteran in the field. Most of the Product Managers were very clear of George's ways of
working and had thoroughly prepared for the meeting and were giving to the point answers. George then
started with Satish. Satish being new to the product, was quite confused and fared miserably.
Preet immediately understood that George had possibly failed to remember that Satish was new to the
job. He thought of interrupting George's questioning and giving a discrete reminder that Satish was new.
But by that time, George who was pretty upset with the lack of preparation by Satish made a public
statement "Gentlemen, you are witnessing here an example of sloppy work and this can't be excused".
Now Preet was in two minds - should he interrupt George and tell him that Satish is new in that position
OR should he wait till the end of the meeting and tell George privately. Preet chose the second option.
Satish was visibly angry at the treatment meted out by George but he also chose to keep mum. George the
quickly closed meeting saying that he found in general, lack of planning in the department and asked Preet
to stay back in the room for further discussions.
Before Preet could give any explanation on Satish, George asked him "Tell me
openly, Preet, was I too rough with that boy?" Preet said "Yes, you were. In fact, I
was about to remind you that Satish is new to the job". George explained that the
fact that Satish was new to the job didn't quite register with him during the
meeting. George admitted that he had made a mistake and asked his secretary to
get Satish report to the room immediately.
A perplexed and uneasy Satish reported to George's room after few minutes.
George looking Satish straight into his eyes said "I have done something which I
should have never even thought of and I want to apologise to you. It is my mistake
that I did not recollect that you were new to the job when I was questioning you".
Satish was left speechless.
George continued "I would like to state few things clearly to you. Your job is to
make sure that people like me and your bosses do not make stupid decisions. We
have good confidence in your abilities and that is why we have brought you to the
Head Office. For everybody, time is required for learning. I will expect you to know
all the nuances of your product in three months time. Until then you have my
complete confidence". George closed the conversation with a big reassuring
handshake with Satish.
THE PROBLEM:
This cacase talks about the difficulty mr.sathish faced with the higher authority during
an meeting session. This case involves mr.satish sales manager, Vice president mr.George and marketing
director Preet.
The problem arises when mr.satish was made to feel low pointing to his sloppy work in
front of everyone without remembering him that he was an fresher. But soon mr.George realized his
mistake and corrected it. IAs of this situation mr.satish was taken as a replacement to attend the meeting
by Preet. He also felt that it would provide him an opportunity to learn something.
Any one who is to attend a business meeting has to follow the ethics which include.
• Arrive Early (No Excuses)
• Follow the Agenda
• Be Thoroughly Prepared
• Take Regular Breaks
• Follow the Dress Code
• Speak in Turn
• Listen, Really Listen
• Keep Calm
• Be Polite With Your Phone
• Don't Bring Guests
QUESTION. 1
Was it at all necessary for George to apologise to such a junior employee like Satish?

If it does good to the organization what George did was then there is nothing in
apologizing to Mr.sathish. Being the VP of the company mr.George has to make decisions where the
employees are satisfied as well along with fulfilling his obligation.
Mr.sathish may be a junior to mr.George but the mistake was on his side. Hence he has to
maintain a smooth relationship with everyone around him.
Mr.George's way of tackling the meeting was good but he forgot Mr.satish being an fresher
hence he stated the statement showing mr.satish sloppy work.

QUESTION. 2
If you were in Satish's place, how would you to respond to George's apology?

If I were in Mr.sathish place at that point of time I wouldn't have reacted much as
Mr.George contradicted Mr.satish, he tookthe best decision of apologizing to him.
If it was in the first place mr.George could have changed the way he pointed Mr.satish.
QUESTION. 3
Was George correct in saying that Satish is there to correct the "stupid mistake" of his boss and George?
As of this statement mr.George told Mr.sathis to correct even the stupid decision that either he or
his boss takes. At this mr.sathish should take effort to what the VP said.
This show that even the line managers are free to give their views. some of the most common
problems that arise in the line of authorities or workers are.
• Give feedbacks.
• take in suggestions.
• Able to give results at optimum.
• Be open to views.
Thus mr.George welcoming the views from even the employees under him provide the employees an
trustworthiness.
QUESTION. 4
Would you employ George in your company?

Yes I will definitely hire mr.George in my company because mistakes can be corrected. That is
what mr.George did as of this case.. Rejecting a person like I wouldose a skilled person from my
organization.
For any organization the assets are the employees no Matter what their position is they should
be trustworthy enough to long last in it.
Especially when it comes to being in an higher level they should think by stepping in others shoe.

QUESTION. 5
Did Preet make a mistake by not intervening during the meeting and correct George's misconception
about Satish?

Yes Preet could have made an attempt to intervene mr.George eventhough it is not a manner of
to interrupt.
If Preet had intervened and reminded mr.George of sathish he would have stayed through out the
meeting.
QUESTION. 6
As an HR man, how would you define the character of George - bullying but later regretting?Does his
attitude need to be corrected?
Mr.George should Also be knowing the people who are to attend the meeting. If he
had did that if wouldn't have forgotten Mr.sathish as an fresher.
Even if mr.satish was sloppy in his work it is never too late to give another chance. Which
George had failed.
Bullying but regretting later only costed Mr.sathish to loosing to attend the whole meeting.

QUESTION. 7
Would you be happy to have George/Preet as your boss?

Yes I would like to have either of them as my boss because everyone is unique.

Even in this case mr.George seems to be a person who wants perfection. And Preet bought in
Mr.sathish to make him learn something new.
CONCLUSION.
As of this case it shows each person's behavior and their exposure. When it comes to being in a
strong position they should remember what exactly it is. And even to employees they should be prepared
for any responsibility.
It shows how to learn from an different environment where there are many aspects surround
around everyone.
