Sequences and Series
Sequence
Sequence tells you the order in which things happen or come.
or
A following of one thing after another; succession.
For Example,
(C, R, Y) is a sequence of letters that differs from (Y, C, R), as the ordering
Examples
1, 2, 3, 4 ,…….
2,4,6,8,…
1, 3, 5, 3, 9,…
2, 0, 3, 1, 4, 2, 5…

Sequences and Series
Arithmetic Sequences
A sequence in which each term after the first term is found by adding a
constant (called the common difference d) to a previous term, is
called arithmetic sequences
Example
1 2, 3, 4, …..
2, 4, 6, 8, ….
Explanations
• 150, 300, 450, 600, 750…
• The first term of our
sequence is 150, we denote
the first term as a1.
• What is a2?
• a2 : 300 (a2 represents the
2nd term in our sequence)
Explanations
• a3 = ? a4 = ? a5 = ?
• a3 : 450 a4 : 600 a5 : 750
Geometric
Series
Geometric Series
• Geometric Series - the sum
of the terms of a geometric
sequence.
• Geo. Sequence: 1, 3, 9, 27, 81
• Geo. Series: 1+3 + 9 + 27 + 81
• What is the sum of the
geometric series?
Geometric Series
• 1 + 3 + 9 + 27 + 81 = 121
• The formula for the sum Sn
of the first n terms of a
geometric series is given by
n n
a1- a1 r a1(1 - r )
Sn = or Sn =
1- r 1- r
Converging Series
• Under certain conditions, a geometric series will
converge (or head towards) a certain sum
• For example, consider ½ + ¼ + 1/8 …
• S4 = .9375
• S6 = .984375
• S10 = .999023…
• S20 = .9999990463
• S30 = .999999999991
• It appears that as n gets larger, the sum is getting closer
and closer to 1.
• We say that as n approaches infinity, the sum converges
on 1
• When we look at what happens to the sum as n
approaches infinity, we consider the series an infinite
geometric series
When will this occur?
• For most geometric series, the sum keeps
getting either larger or smaller as n increases
• For example, 2 + 3 + 4.5 + 6.75…
• S2 = 5
• S4 = 16.25
• S10 = 226.66
• S20 = 13,297.02
• S30 = 767,000.2369
• Under what conditions will this sum approach a
specific number?
It depends on “r”, the common ratio
• If r < 1, then the terms get smaller and
smaller as the series goes on, meaning
that the amount each term contributes to
the sum becomes increasingly negligible
• On the other hand, if r > 1, then the
terms get farther apart from each other as
the series goes on, so that the sum keeps
getting bigger or smaller rather than
leveling off
