INTRODUCTION
What Is Belt Drive ?
A belt is a loop of flexible material
used to link two or more rotating shafts mechanically, most
often parallel. Belts may be used as a source of motion, to
transmit power efficiently or to track relative movement.

 What Is Flat Belt Drive ?

It is the belt of square or rectangle
cross section used to transmit the power between two
shafts.
BELT MATERIAL
BELT MATERIAL-
According to the Material Used Belts are classified
into
1. Leather Belts
2. Cotton or Fabric Belts
3. Rubber Belts
4. Balata belts (Similar to rubber belt except that balata
gum is used in place of rubber)
TYPES OF BELT DRIVE
Types Of Belt Drive:
Belt drive is classified into five types.
 Open Belt Drive.
 Crossed Belt Drive.
 Belt Drive with Idler.
 Compound belt drive.
 Stepped or Cone pulley Drive.
TYPES OF BELT DRIVE
Open Belt Drive Crossed Belt Drive
1.Shafts are parallel 1.Shafts are parallel
2.Rotation of pulleys in same direction 2.Rotation of pulleys in opposite direction

Quarter Turn Belt Drive Belt Drives with Idler Pulley

1.Shafts are at right angle 1.Used when open belt drives angle of contact is less
2.Rotation in one definite direction 2.Used when required belt tension is not achieved
TYPES OF BELT DRIVE
 Open Belt Drive: The open belt drive is used with
shafts arranged parallel and rotating in the same
direction.

 Crossed Belt Drive: The crossed belt drive is used

with shafts arranged parallel and rotating in the
opposite direction

 Belt Drive with Idler pulleys: It is used with shafts

arranged parallel and when belt drive cannot be used
due to small angle of contact on the smaller pulley
TYPES OF BELT DRIVE
 Compound belt drive : A compound belt drive is
as shown in fig. used to transmit power from one
shaft to another shaft through no. of pulleys

 Stepped or Cone pulley Drive: It is used for

changing the speed of the driven shaft while main
shaft runs at constant speed.
BELT DRIVE SELECTION CRITERIA
Belt Drive Selection Criteria:-
1. Speed of driving and driven shafts.
2. Power to be transmitted.
3. Positive Drive Requirements.
4. Space Available.
5. Speed Reduction Ratio.
6. Centre distance between two shaft.
7. Shaft layout.
8. Service Condition.
SELECTION OF BELT CRITERIA
There are two types of belts from which you can select from. They
are:
Dunlop “HI – SPEED” 878 g duck belting – Used in light and medium duty
applications with high belt velocity.

Dunlop “FORT” 949 g duck belting – Used in heavy duty applications with medium
belt speeds.

For design power < 20 kW and belt velocity > 16 m/s, select Dunlop “HI – SPEED” 878
g duck belting.

For design power > 20 kW and belt velocity < 16 m/s, select Dunlop “FORT” 949 g
duck belting.

DESIGN OF FLAT BELT DRIVE
Step 5 :- Find tension in tight side

T1 = Tmax - TC

Where,
Tmax = Max tension
= σ × cross section area

TC = Centrifugal tension
DESIGN OF FLAT BELT DRIVE
ADVANTAGES OF FLAT BELT DRIVE
Advantage Of Flat Belt Drive-

1. Flat belts are simple in design and cheaper.

2. Smooth and quiet running.
3. It can be used for long distance even up to 15m.
4. They are durable.
5. Precise alignment of shaft and pulley is not
criteria.
6. They are flexible
DISADVANTAGES OF FLAT BELT DRIVE
Disadvantage Of Flat Belt Drive-

1. High chance of slip off.

2. It require more pretension compare to v-belt to
transmit certain torque.
3. Flat belts are not advisable for higher output at
higher speed.
4. They are bulky and require wide pulley
