Introduction

• NAME OF STUDENT: YUSUF, YUSUF JUMA

• REGISTRATION NO: 2016-04-08653
• ACADEMIC SUPERVISOR: DR. HENRY KIWELU

• PROJECT: MTONI MARINE VERDE HOTEL
• PLACE: MTONI MARINE ZANZIBAR
• DURATION: 10 JULY 2017 - 02 SEPTEMBER 2017
Introduction

• The project site was located at Zanzibar (Unguja) inside the Mtoni
marine palace. It was about the construction of new Mtoni marine
palace known as Zanzibar Verde hotel.
• The project was about the construction of
Guest house
Hotel reception and restaurant
Gym and Spa building
Water treatment plant and swimming pool.
Introduction
• At time of arriving:
Guest house building was at the finishing stage where finishes like painting
and tiling were done. The hotel reception and restaurant building was at the
stage of construction of partition walls and installation of services like
plumbing installation. Gym and spa building was at the construction of the
first floor slab. Water treatment plant was at excavation stage.
• At time of leaving:
Guest house building was at the final stage of finishing. The hotel reception
and restaurant was at the stage of installation of services like air conditioning
and cold and hot water system. Gym and spa was at the construction of the
second floor. Water treatment plant was at the construction of the first floor
slab and swimming pool was at construction of walls.
operations
• Operations that were done in the site during the construction include
Excavation
Steel fixing
Formworking
Concrete pouring
Block walling
Plastering
Painting
Tiling
Excavation

• Excavation is the digging of the ground to remove soil. Excavation is

done before the construction of the building. It is done with the help
of excavator and spade.
• Excavation was done in the site for the construction of raft foundation
of water treatment plant, raft foundation of swimming pool, pad
foundation, strip foundation, rigid pavement road, piping, etc.
Steel fixing

• Steel fixing is the fastening of the steel reinforcing bars so that they
stay in the correct place between the spacers and relative to each
other.
• It is performed with the help of pincer, bar bender, grinder etc.
• Steel fixing in the site was done for columns, beams, slabs, rigid
pavement road, concrete wall, etc.
Formworking
• Formwork is a temporary molds into which concrete materials are
poured. Material used for formwork include hard wood, ply wood,
steel, etc. Formwork consists of braces, soffit, stakes, batten, etc.
• Beam formwork is usually supported by scaffolds.
• Formworking was done for columns, beams, column footings, slabs,
etc.
Pouring of concrete
• Concrete is usually poured in the corresponding position after the
formwork was prepared and fixed in position. Concrete is poured with
the help of concrete pump and pipe and then spread by spades.
• Before the concrete is finished with trowel, it should be allowed to
settle.
• Pouring of concrete was done for columns, beams, foundation
footings, raft foundation, beams etc.
Block walling
• Most of the walls of the buildings in the project were block walls.
• Block wall is made up of blocks jointed with cement mortar. Before
blocks are laid and jointed in position, setting out should be done to
ensure the right position of the wall and straightness of the wall.
• Most of the wall for both internal and external walls in the project
were of 150mm thick.
Plastering
• Plastering is the process of covering the wall surface with wet mix
material to provide smooth, clean and good surface suitable for direct
decoration. Purpose of plastering includes covering the poor
workmanship and defects.
• Internal plastering is finished with metal float while external
plastering is finished with wooden float.
• The wall was prepared by brushing it then water was poured on it to
keep the bond between it and the coming plaster.
• Mortar was then applied to the wall and finished with trowel.
Painting
• Painting is the process of wiping paint on the surface. Paints can be oil
based paints or water based paints. The main purpose of painting is
decoration. Also paint is applied to cover and prevent the corrosion
and wearing of the surface.
• Before the paint is applied, the surface should be prepared by rubbing
with brush. Then paint is applied in two or three coats depending on
the condition of the wall.
• Each coat should be allowed to dry before the application of another
coat.
Tiling
• Tile is a manufactured piece of hard wearing material such as
ceramic, stone, concrete, etc, generally used for covering walls, floors,
showers, etc. There are different types of tiles include ceramic tiles,
marble tiles, terrazzo tiles, concrete tiles etc. Tiles are durable and
easy to clean and repair.
• Before tiles are laid, the surface is cleaned and washed with water to
provide the key bond between it and the mortar that will be laid.
• Then tiles are laid on top of the cement mortar in particular pattern.
Challenges and conclusion
• Challenges
Poor corporation of technicians, foremen, labours and other workers
to students. This hinders the acquiring ability of practical knowledge
Inadequate time of practical training because 8 weeks are not
enough and works are so many in the site
• Conclusion
The practical training is very important because it gives students the
opportunity to learn practically what were they learn from their
lecturers in the class.
