Title: Josephine's Head
Material: Clay Remarks: Made in Dapitan • Measuring 39 inches long, 18 and a half inches wide, and 2 and a half inches high, the oval bas-relief wood sculpture was carved from a single piece of wood (surmised by León Gallery consultants as narra), with a dark varnish. • It features a fit young man dressed in a pair of knee-length pantaloons, holding up a barbell. • the image is Rizal’s self-portrait; not only is there a resemblance between him and the figure in the sculpture, but our national hero was also an athlete, whose sports of choice included fencing, judo, and marksmanship. • It was the gift of Rizal to his friend Ferdinand Blumentritt. The Science of Life over Death • The statue depicts a young, nude woman with flowing hair, standing on a skull while bearing a torch. • The woman symbolizes the "ignorance" of humankind during the Dark ages of history, while the torch she bears symbolizes the "enlightenment science brings to the world". The woman stands atop a skull, a symbol of "death", to signify the victory that humankind aims to achieve by conquering the bane of death through scientific advancement. when the evil forces of darkness gain upper hand from the forces of good and righteousness. Title: Triumph of death over life Material: Clay Remarks: Given to Dr. Blumentritt in 1890 in Brussels • The sculpture in terra cotta (clay), Mother’s Revenge, is an allegorical representation of what was happening in the Philippines during that period. • Shown is a mother dog trying to rescue her helpless pup from the bite of the crocodile. • The mother dog represents “mother Philippines” and the patriots who are doing their best to save the defenseless countrymen - the pup - from the cruelty of the Spaniards as represented by the crocodile.
