Esterification

ALCOHOLYSIS
ACIDOLYSIS
Alcoholysis:

In Alcoholysis or ester-interchange reaction, an alcohol reacts with an ester to

give a new ester.

CH3COOC2H5 + HOCH3 CH3COOCH3 +HOC2H5

Alcoholysis may be regarded as a special case of esterification.

Catalyst(strong acids or alkaline catalysts) used in esterification, equally serve
in Alcoholysis.
Acidolysis:

 I this reaction one acid displaces another from the ester.

CH3COOC2H5 + C15H31COOH C15H31COOC2H5 + CH3COOH

Slower acid catalysts or heat alone must be used.

Alkaline catalysts are not sufficient in acidolysis.
Preparation of vinyl Acetate:

 Reaction:
Vapor phase reaction between acetic acid and acetylene.
Catalyst:
Zinc acetate(42 parts of 100 of charcoal).
(3-5mm) of granule size.

Temperature:
170 *c
Preparation of vinyl Acetate:
