Condition Monitoring

(Vibration Nomograph)
• Vibrations can cause adverse effects on machines, structures & humans.
• Complete suppression of vibrations may be very costly therefore designs are based on
acceptable levels of vibrations.
• The acceptable levels of vibrations are usually shown on a graph called Vibration Nomograph.

Taking ln both sides of 1 & 2:

Eq 3 & 4 represents straight lines with +ve &

-ve slopes respectively:
• In a nomograph the x-axis is frequency while
the y-axis represents the velocity.
• Thus, every point on a nomograph represents
a harmonic vibration.
Since vibrations imparted to machines and humans can be composed of different
frequencies RMS values are considered.
Acceptable Levels of Vibrations for Different Areas

Item Frequency Range Amplitude Range

(Hz) (mm)
Atomic Vibrations 1012 10-8 -10-6
Precision & 0.1-1 10-5 -10-3
Electronics
Machinery 10 -100 0.01 - 1
Sky scrappers 0.1 - 5 1 - 1000
Human Perception 1-8 accelerations

• Standards are developed according to ISO recommendations.

• ISO 2372 for machinery, ISO DP 4866 for buildings & ISO 2631 for human sensitivity.
