Combustion turbine

 A gas turbine is also called as a combustion

turbine.
 Type of internal combustion engine.
 It has an upstream rotating compressor
coupled to a down stream turbine , and a
combustion chamber in between.
 Energy is added to the gas stream in the
combustor, where fuel is mixed with air and
ignited.
 In the high pressure environment of the
combustor combustion of fuel increases the
temperature
 The gas turbine has become an important
widespread and reliable device in the field of
power generation transportation and other
application
 A gas turbine is an internal combustion engine
it can burn variety of fuels.
 Energy is added to the gas stream in the
combustor where fuel is mixed with air and
ignited .
 In the high pressure environment of the
combustor combustion of fuel increases the
temperature .
 The products of combustion are forced into the
turbine section .
 There the high velocity and volumes of gas
flow is directed through a nozzle over the
turbine blades spinning the turbine which
powers the compressor and for some turbines
drives their mechanical output .
 The energy given up to the turbine comes from
reduction in the temperature and pressure of
the exhaust.
 It is the thermodynamic cycle that describes the
working of the gas turbine basis of the air
breathing jet engine and others.
 Jet engines
 Turboprop engines
 Aero derivative gas turbine
 Amateur gas turbine
 Auxiliary power unit
 Industrial gas turbine
 Compressed air energy storage
 Turbo shaft engines radial gas turbines scale jet
engines
 Gas turbines are often used in ships
locomotives helicopter tanks cars busses
motorcycles
 A key advantage of jet and turboprops for
aeroplanes propulsion
 Their superior performance at high altitude
compared to piston engines particularly
naturally aspirated ones is irrelevant in
automobiles application .
 Their power to weight advantage though less
critical than for aircraft is still important .
 More recently there has been some intrust in
the use of turbine engines for hybrid electric
cars.
 For instance a consortium led by micro gas
turbine company Bladon jets has secured
investment from the Technological strategy
board to develop an ultra light weight range
extender for next generation electric vehicles .
 jaguar C-X75 concept car
 This electrically powered super car has a top
speed of 204 mph and can go from 0 to 62 mph
in 3.4 seconds which combine to produce
 It uses lithium ion batteries to power 4 electric
motors which combine to produce some 780
bhp
 It will do around 100 mile son a single charge
of the batteries but in addition it uses a pair of
baldon micro gas turbine.to recharge the
batteries extending the range to some 560 miles
 Rover and the BRM formula one team joined
forced to produce the rover BRM a gas turbine
powered coupe which entered the 1963 24
hours of le mans drive by Graham hill and
Richie.
 It averaged 107.8 mph and had a top speed of
142 mph.
 Very high power to weight ratio compared to
reciprocating engines
 smaller then most reciprocating engines of same
power rating
 Moves in one direction only with far less vibration
then a reciprocating engines
 Few moving parts than reciprocating engine
 low operating pressure
 High operation speed
 Low lubricating oil cost and consumption
 Can run on wide variety of fuels.
 Cost is very high
 Less efficient than reciprocating engines at
ideal speed.
 Longer start-up than reciprocating engine
 Less responsive to changes in power compared
to reciprocating engines.
