The document discusses Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist and the significance of baptism. It notes that Jesus came to John to be baptized to fulfill all righteousness and set an example for believers. When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened and God declared Him His beloved Son. The document argues baptism signifies dying and rising with Christ through faith in Him, not as a way to attain salvation or righteousness itself.

unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?“ 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. 16When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." I.There is more than one Baptism. The word “baptisms” in Heb. 6:2 is plural
A. Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Believers receive power from on high to be witnesses for JESUS, Acts 1:8.
“ But ye shall receive power, after that
the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” B. Water Baptism
Believers’act of obedience to GOD, Mt.
28:19, and identification with CHRIST, Rom. 6:3-4. “ Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? “ Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. A. The Example of Jesus, Matt. 3:13-17
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the
Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?'' 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.'' Then he allowed Him. 16. Then Jesus, when He had been baptized, came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'' 1. “For this” – in this manner
Themanner or way for JESUS to be
baptized is by immersion.
The Bible says, “He…came up
immediately from the water…” (v.16). That means JESUS was totally immersed in the water. 2. “It is fitting for us”
JESUS said, “It is fitting for us.” He
should have said “it is fitting for ME” because He was the only one to be baptized. JESUS here is identifying Himself with all Believers and He is saying, “What I AM doing now is proper, fitting for all of you-including ME- for us. 3. “To Fulfil All Righteousness”
JESUS was fulfilling all
righteousness when HE was being baptized. This means that HE was showing to the world that HE is righteous before HIS FATHER.
When the Christian or Believer is
being baptized in water, he is obeying JESUS. The Christian is showing to the world that he is righteous before the FATHER.
The righteousness of a Christian is
the righteousness of JESUS that he received when he accepted CHRIST; it did not originate from him. So, in water baptism, the Christian is showing to the world that he is righteous before GOD. B. Identifying with CHRIST
Dying with JESUS and rising with JESUS to a
new life – Rom. 6:3-4, 6,11 1. When a person receives JESUS as LORD, that person: a.Becomes a new creation, 2Cor. 5:17 b.Is placed by the FATHER inside JESUS, I Cor. 1:30. 30But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption — 2.This same person, because he is inside JESUS (that is the meaning of the term “In Christ”), experiences what happened to JESUS, namely:
a.He dies with JESUS on the cross;
b.He is buried with JESUS; and c.He rises with JESUS to a new life, Rom. 6:3-4, 6, 11; Gal. 2:20; Col. 3:1, 3. c. Baptism in water does not give you eternal life. It is JESUS who gives you eternal life, I Jn. 5:11-13; Rev. 3:20; Jn. 3:16.
When you receive JESUS as your LORD,
then at that moment you: - Were born again - Were placed inside JESUS - Received eternal life, and - Became righteous by receiving the righteousness of JESUS 3. It is proper for us to do it. Baptism in water is a command for all Christians, Mt. 28;19-20.
Be born again or receive JESUS as LORD
