GMDSS
GMDSS = Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
SAILOR 6110 Presentation
GMDSS requirement:

An Inmarsat ship earth station capable of:

(SOLAS1974, as amended,regulationsIV/10)

• Transmitting and receiving distress and safety

communications using direct-printing telegraphy

• Initiating and receiving distress priority calls ;
• Maintaining watch for shore-to-ship distress
alerts, including those directed to specifically
defined geographical areas ;
• Transmitting and receiving general radio
communications, using either radiotelephony or
direct-printing telegraphy ;
SAILOR 6110 Presentation
GMDSS requirements:

Class of GMDSS is specified by coverage

• Sea area A1
• Within coverage of at least one VHF coast station in which
continuous DSC alerting is available (about 20-30nm,i.e. line
of sight)
• Sea area A2
• Within coverage of a MF coast station operating in 2-3MHz
band in which continuous DSC alerting is available (about
l00nm)
• Sea area A3
• Area excluding A1 and A2 but within coverage of an
Inmarsat geostationary satellite coverage in which
continuous alerting is available (generally defined as being
within lattitudes 78N and 78S)
• Sea area A4
• An area outside sea areas A1, A2 and A3, i.e. outside the
Inmarsat geostationary satellite coverage (polar regions)

mini-C antenna Installation
Antenna mounting conditions
As free from obstructions as possible
If an obstruction such as a pole or a funnel is
unavoidable To calculate the minimum
distance, use the following formula:

Safe distance = 29 * Diameter of

obstruction

Example:
Obstruction is a 4" pole (Diameter = 0.1 m)
Safe distance is 29 * 0.1 m = 2.9 m

mini-C antenna Installation
Antenna mounting conditions

• Maintain a certain distance to radar

installations, (normally the best
place for the antenna would be
above radar antennas)
mini-C antenna Installation
Antenna mounting conditions
• The antenna is designed to provide
satellite coverage even when the
vessel has pitch and roll movements
up to 15°
• To maintain this coverage the
antenna should be free from
obstructions in the area down to 15°
below the horizon.
mini-C antenna Installation
Antenna mounting conditions

• Maintain a certain distance to other

antennas

• The following safe distances

are recommended:

Distance to HF antennas > 5 meter

Distance to VHF antennas > 4 meter
Distance to other Inmarsat-C transceiver. Important: > 1.5 meter
Remember to check the corresponding requirement of
the other equipment.

Distance to magnetic compass > 0.3 meter

SAILOR 6000 LRIT

SAILOR 6000
LRIT
Long Range Identification and Tracking System
SAILOR 6000 LRIT
Long Range Identification and Tracking

IMO requirements:

IMO has adopted an amendment to Chapter V of the

International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea
1974(SOLAS), which introduces new mandatory position
reporting obligations for SOLAS ships.

It is called Long Range Identification and Tracking

(LRIT) and requires vessels to automatically transmit identity
and position with date/time at 6-hour intervals.

LRIT equipment must also be able to respond to requests

from LRITdata centers, for immediate position reports, and
be able to change the time interval from 6-hour intervals, to
a frequency of every 15 minutes.
SAILOR 6000 LRIT
Long Range Identification and Tracking
• The flag state receives the positional information from the vessel at the
Datacenter (DC), after having downloaded a DNID and a program through
the Application Service Provider (ASP).
SAILOR 6000 LRIT
Long Range Identification and Tracking

• Inmarsat-C has been chosen as the main on board

LRIT data transmission platform, meaning the majority
of vessels required to comply already have compatible
equipment on board in the form of GMDSS or SSAS.

• To be able to use the data-/position reporting mode in

the Inmarsat-C system you need a so-called DNID
number.

• The DNID configuration and download is handled

remote by the LRIT Data Center.
SAILOR 6000 LRIT
DNID = Data Network ID

• DNID is a LES-Mailbox that routes

the traffic between the Control
Center and the Inmarsat-C
transceiver
• A DNID can have up to 255 individual
Inmarsat-C registered as members
• The DNID forwards incoming position
reports to a specific destination
address
• DNID used to poll the easyTracks
• Can address a whole fleet of
Inmarsat-C simultaneously using
Group Poll
• DNID together with Member No. can
address one specific Inmarsat-C in a
fleet.
SAILOR 6000 LRIT

SAILOR 6130 LRIT

SAILOR 6130 LRIT Stand Alone

• Complies with the LRIT regulation and

automatically reports the position of the ship
every 6 hours.

• When used with a 6194 Terminal Control Unit,

the SAILOR 6140 can be connected to a
computer using either the LAN interface or the
RS-232 interface (e.g. for software update).

80
SAILOR 6130 LRIT
SAILOR 6130 LRIT terminal is completely plug and play.
No configuration is required at installation.

Default configuration
 Auto grouping of DNIDs enabled.
 All event reports and event controls disabled.
 Default reporting format and auto creating of interval
program configured.
 Default reporting interval 6 hours.

When the LRIT ASP downloads the first DNID into the terminal
it will automatically create a program that reports with the
required 6 hours interval.
SAILOR 6130 LRIT
Testing:
Request a LESO in the Inmarsat-C
system to perform a PVT
(Performance Verification Test) on
the mobile under test.
The LESO operator returns the result of
the test, which is either that the
mobile passed or failed the test. A
written result might look like:

Any further requirements for testing are

defined by the Flag State authority.
SAILOR 6000 LRIT

SAILOR 6120 SSAS with LRIT:

• The best choice for LRIT compatible

o Majority of its lifetime is idle, reporting will constantly
show that the system is functional.

o Since the SSAS installations were not initially regarded as

being used for tracking some settings will have to be
changed to allow the terminal to be used for both SSAS
and LRIT.

• NO additional hardware required

• NO configuration needs to change

83
SAILOR 6000 LRIT

SAILOR 6110 mini-C GMDSS with LRIT:

• SAILOR 6110 is NOT the best choice for the LRIT

functionality.
o main purpose is not for tracking but GMDSS safety,
meaning that EGCs messages will be prioritized higher
than data reporting.

o This can in effect mean that the terminals go in

incompliance in periods due to missing/ delayed data
reports.

• NO additional hardware needed

• NO configuration needs to change

84
SAILOR 6000 LRIT

Some useful commands for LRIT:

• Display DNID:
“st –d” or “dn –d”

• Max. 64 DNID can be downloaded

to a mini-C

• Check programs:
“pg –d”

• Connection status:
remote, local or closed

• Letters inside the [ ] give

information about the status
of connection:
p = data loaded from the GPS
(sub-address 1)
i = Initiated
s = stopped

Some useful commands for LRIT:
