Clippers

Sometimes known as a diode limiter.

A diode network that have the ability to clip off a portion of the input signal
without distorting the remaining part of the alternating waveform.

Two categories:
1. series - as one where the diode is in series with the load
2. parallel - has the diode in a branch parallel to the load

Series:
Input: Output:

𝑣𝑜 = 𝑣𝑖 at the a half cycle

Make a mental sketch of the response of the network based on the direction of the
diode and the applied voltage levels

Determine the output waveform for the network.
a) as ideal diode
At positive cycle
𝑣𝑖 = 0V, 𝑣𝑜 = 5V
𝑣𝑖 = 5V, 𝑣𝑜 = 10V
𝑣𝑖 = 10V, 𝑣𝑜 = 15V
𝑣𝑖 = 20V, 𝑣𝑜 = 25V

At negative cycle
𝑣𝑖 = 0V, 𝑣𝑜 = 5V
𝑣𝑖 = -5V, 𝑣𝑜 = 0V
𝑣𝑖 = -15V, 𝑣𝑜 = 0V
𝑣𝑖 = -20V, 𝑣𝑜 = 0V

Determine the output waveform for the network.
At positive cycle
b) as practical diode
𝑣𝑖 = 0V, 𝑣𝑜 = 4.3V = 5 – 0.7
𝑣𝑖 = 5V, 𝑣𝑜 = 9.3V = 10 -0.7
𝑣𝑖 = 10V, 𝑣𝑜 = 14.3V = 15 – 0.7
𝑣𝑖 = 20V, 𝑣𝑜 = 24.3V = 25 - 0.7

At negative cycle
𝑣𝑖 = 0V, 𝑣𝑜 = 4.3V
𝑣𝑖 = -5V, 𝑣𝑜 = 0V
𝑣𝑖 = -15V, 𝑣𝑜 = 0V
𝑣𝑖 = -20V, 𝑣𝑜 = 0V

Clampers
Sometimes known as dc restorer.

Is one that will clamp a signal to a different dc level. The network must have a
capacitor, a diode, and a resistive element, but it can also employed an
independent dc supply to introduce additional shift
