The Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature


(Palanca Awards) was established in 1950 to commemorate
the memory of Don Carlos Palanca, Sr. through an endeavor
that would promote education and culture in the country.

Institutions

 Founded in 1981, the Manila Critics Circle is a non-profit,


non-stock organization of professional literary critics and
newspaper columnists who believe that Philippine books
deserve much more attention than they usually get from
business, media, and the general public.

Institutions

Was created by law in 1992. It has a committee on literary


arts which funds workshops, conferences, publications and
a variety projects geared towards the production of a
“national literature”. The committee has the aim to
develop writing that is multi-lingual, multi-cultural and
truly national.

• NICOMEDES MARQUEZ JOAQUIN (Nick Joaquin)
May 4, 1917- April 29, 2004
Filipino writer, historian and journalist, best
known for his short stories and novels in the
English language.
Quijano de Manila
was conferred the rank and title of National Artist
of the Philippines for Literature.

• Is an iconic comic creator writer, film director,


and producer.
• He popularized Pinoy super heores and

Joaquin Bordado, etc.
• His contributions as a director to the film
industry centered more on true story massacre
movies like, The Baleleng, the Cory Quirino
