What is hydrometeorological

hazard?
 Hydrometeorology: it’s a branch of
meteorology and hydrology that
studies the transfer of water and
energy between the land surface
and the lower atmosphere.

 Hazard:any source that can cause

harm or damage to humans,
property or the environment.
Hydrometeorological hazard is
“Process or phenomenon of
atmospheric, hydrological or
oceanographic nature that may
cause loss of life, injury or other
health impacts, property damage,
loss of livelihoods and services,
social and economic disruption, or
environmental damage”.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1
WINDS: 30-60 kph may be
expected in at least 36 hr
DAMAGE TO STRUCTURE:
1. Very light or no damage to
high risk structures,
2. Light to medium and low risk
structures
3. Slight damage to some houses of
very light materials or makeshift
structures in exposed communities.

DAMAGE TO VEGETATION:
1. Some banana plants are tilted, a few
downed and leaves are generally
damaged
2. Twigs of small trees may be broken.
3. Rice crops, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its
flowering stage.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #2
WINDS: 61-120 kph may be expected in
at least 24 hr
DAMAGE TO STRUCTURE:
1. Light to Moderate damage to high
risk
structures;
2. Very light to light damage to
medium-risk structures;
3. No damage to very light damage
to low risk structures

DAMAGE TO VEGETATION:
1. Most banana plants and a few
Mango trees, and other trees
are downed or broken.
2. Some coconut trees may be
tilted with few others broken.
3. Rice and corn may be adversely
affected.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #3
WINDS: 121-170 kph may be
expected in at least 18 hr

DAMAGE TO STRUCTURE:
1. Heavy damage to
high–risk structures;
2. Moderate damage to
medium-risk structures;
3. Light damage to low-risk
structures
4. Increasing damage to old,
dilapidated residential structures
and houses of light materials
(up to 50% in a community)
5. Houses of medium strength materials,
are unroofed.
DAMAGE TO VEGETATION:
1. Almost all banana plants are downed,
some big trees are broken or uprooted,
2. Dwarf-type or hybrid coconut trees are tilted or downed.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #4
WINDS: 171-220 kph may be expected in at least 12 hr
DAMAGE TO STRUCTURE:
1.Very heavy damage to
high –risk structures.
2. Considerable damage to structures
of light materials (up to 75% are totally
and partially destroyed).
3. Many houses of medium-built materials
are unroofed, some with collapsed walls;
extensive damage to doors and windows
4. A few houses of first-class materials are
partially damaged
DAMAGE TO VEGETATION:
1. Most types of large trees are downed
or broken.
2. Coconut plantation may suffer extensive
damage.
3. Rice and corn plantation may suffer severe losses.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #5
WINDS: > 220 kph may be expected in at least 12 hr
A Super Typhoon will affect the locality.
DAMAGE TO STRUCTURE:
1. Widespread damage to
high-risk structures
2. Almost total damage to structures
of light in highly exposed coastal areas.
3. Most residential and institutional
buildings of mixed construction
may be severely damaged.
4. Electrical power distribution
and communication services
severely disrupted.
 DAMAGE TO VEGETATION:
1. Most tall trees are broken,
uprooted.
2. Few plants and trees survived
