Objective
“Bakun Run-of-River Hydro Power Plant aims to generate 70MW of Electricity from
clean and Renewable sources.”
Significance

“This power plant is intended to lessen the National Power Corporation’s dependence
on the base-load thermal power plant which uses imported fuel. “

Type:

"run-of-river" hydroelectric production

(which harnesses the natural flow of the river to produce electricity
does not involve constructing an impounding dam and reservoir. )

II. THE GENERATING PROCESSES
 The head works consist of an 11m high mass concrete weir incorporating a 21m long
crest intake and a bypass spillway.
 The intake diverts 20 cumecs of water from the Bakun River, augmented by diverting a
downstream tributary through a 100m long diversion tunnel and 80m long pipeline, 15
cumecs.

 To reduce maintenance, all water entering the power station passes through a 75m long,
underground "desanding" basin, which slows the water flow and allows particles up to
0.5mm in size to settle out.

 After passing through the desander, the water travels 9.5km along tunnels, the first
6.5km of which is 3.4m in diameter and supported by rockbolts and steel fibre
reinforced sprayed concrete. The remaining 3km of tunnel is steel lined to withstand the
high head.

 The power station has a reinforced concrete substructure and a structural steel
superstructure. Its installed capacity of 70MW comes from two horizontally mounted
generator sets driven by 17.5MW twin jet Pelton turbines.

 Construction of the hydro plant eliminates the environmental consequences of burning

approximately 330,000 barrels of oil a year.

have been made on it.

 It is claimed that it eliminates the

environmental consequences of burning
approximately 330,000 barrels of oil a year.
 Bakun has not received any awards so far.
 ERC says they have complied with all
requirements given by the Law.

The Bakun HydroPower plant also complies with
the “10,000-hour operation 0 accident” standard,
OSHA-29CFR1910.
since its operation in 2000,
NO ACCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED.
The Construction costed AU$95 million over 3 years

 “In line with Aboitiz and Pacific Hydro’s commitment to doing Business
ethically, meaning communities can benefit from our projects …”

Bakun HydroElectric Power Plant benefits local communities by:

Steady Supply of Electricity to Local villages.
◦ local roads are being upgraded
(more than 8 kilometres of new roads were built as a result of the project.)

 Two entirely new bridges : the 292 metre long Friendship Bridge

“$1 million more will be spent over the life of the project on upgrading
existing roads, providing medical and education services for the community.

watershed management program, which protects, maintains and rehabilitates
the area's existing forest cover.
The power station creates no waste products and creates no air or water
pollution, meaning the long term impact of the plant on the local community
is minimal.

 Bakun Hydro Electric Plant has not yet utilized the full
capacity of the Site due to friction losses, non-use of
reservoir, and speed of water from the nozzle.
This report recommends that they optimize that nozzle
so that there’s a larger velocity on the Impulse Turbine.

 In 2008, the spike in the price of petroleum products

has caused API to incur a net loss for the year.

 Bakun Hydro Electric Plant has achieved its original

objective of 70MW from clean and renewable energy.
