INTODUCTION
Chimneys are tall and slender structures which are used to discharge
waste/flue gases at a higher elevation with sufficient exit velocity to
disperse into the atmosphere.
• Past researchers have done analyses of RCC chimney subjected to seismic load by
discretizing the structure using lumped mass criterion where the total mass of a
part is assumed to act at a particular node. But this method of discretization does
not replicate the real-time conditions of the structure.
• Then, the chimney is modelled using beam elements and the analysis is carried
using software like STAAD Pro or SAP2000 which resulted in value closer to the
experimental value.
• Further for more accuracy, the chimney is discretized into several parts using
consistent masses criterion which includes the effect of rigidity to bending, the
cross-section of the element, form factor and shear modulus.
