Fluid-Structure Interaction

Introduction
• This model exemplifies the solution of fluid-structure interactions problems
in COMSOL Multiphysics.
• Viscous forces and the system’s pressure impose forces to the surface of
a structure.
• The deformation of the soft structure is significant and the fluid regime will
therefore dynamically change.
• The Arbitrary Lagrange Eulerian technique (ALE) is used to handle the
dynamics of the computational domain through a virtual moving grid.
Geometry
• A cross section of the structure is modeled.
Model Definition – Equations
• The flow in the channels is modeled with the Navier-Stokes equations:

u
t
 
   u  u    u    u  p  0
T

 u  0

• The structural deformations are modeled using large deformation analysis

as the default setting.
• The modeled fluid is water and the structure is a rubber material.
Results – Steady State
Results – Animation
• The displacement at the top of the obstacle is largest just before the
recirculation zone develops.
