About Him…
•Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938.

• He established the Miyake Design Studio in 1970 and

started to show his line at the Paris Collections in 1973.

•Miyake's basic tenets for making clothes has always been

the idea of creating a garment from 'one piece of cloth',
and the exploration of the space between the human body
and the cloth that covers it.

•His approach to design has always been to strike a

consistent balance between tradition and innovation,
handcrafts and new technology.
INSPIRATION
Wissey Miyake’s style is best known for its blend of
flowing fabrics and designs of Eastern style with the
technology and modern sensibilities of Western style. Using
a wide array of both natural and synthetic materials, Miyake
likes to be seen as an artist rather than a designer,
developing new ways to utilize both function and form in
his designs. In addition to his Pleats Please line, Miyake is
known for his development of A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) –
a single piece of ready to wear clothing – various perfume,
home furnishing, and hosiery products.
•Mr. Miyake "oversees the overall direction of all lines
created by his company", even though the individual
collections have been designed by his staff since his
'retirement' from the fashion world in 1997.

•Issey Miyake - Main collection line, subdivided into

men (since 1978/85) and women (since 1971) collections,

2006).

•Issey Miyake Fête - Colorful women's line that

"draws on the technological innovations of Pleats Please"
(Fête means 'celebration' in French (since 2004)

•Issey Miyake also has a line of perfumes.
•His first fragrance, the light aquatic-floral L'eau d'Issey
for women, was launched in 1992.
• The name L'eau d'Issey (engl.: Issey's water) is a pun. In
French, it sounds identical to "l'odyssée" (engl. odyssey).
The scent was followed by L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme (for
men) in 1994
. L'eau Bleue d'Issey Pour Homme was introduced in 2004;
and it's evolution, L'eau Bleue d'Issey Eau Fraiche was
introduced in 2006..
•Every year since 2007, Issey Miyake has brought
out a "limited time only" fragrance for ladies in
which he brings in a "guest" perfumer.

•In 2007, he launched 'Drop on a Petal', and in 2008

he launched 'Reflections in a Drop'.

•A new Issey Miyake men's fragrance, L'eau d'Issey

Pour Homme Intense, was introduced at Nordstrom
in the United States in June 2007,
with a larger worldwide rollout following in
September 2007.

It might seem like an
unlikely marriage: a
fashion designer and a

this
Issey Miyake's A-POC: A
piece of cloth
Issey Miyake unveiled his new line of
. clothing in 1999, it expressed a visionary
approach to fashion and how it could
function in the modern world. The idea
was simply, "To clothe the human body
with a single piece of cloth" and to "create
clothes that anyone could wear." But few
designers could have managed such a feat:
combining a novel concept, remarkable
design, and the advanced materials to
make it all possible
In 1999, Miyake unveiled A-
POC on the runways of Paris,
23 models walked out in a
single dress-literally, 23
dresses linked together by a
single piece of cloth. It was an
extraordinary statement, and
shortly after, the first A-POC
store opened its doors in
Tokyo, February, 2000. By
November that same year,
another A-POC store had
taken root, this time in Paris
As an exploration into the boundaries of
fashion design, Miyake's project has been,
to a large degree, a success. With his
material ingenuity and keen eye for design,
Issey and his studio have brought APOC
from mere concept to concrete reality. But
to put the A-POC philosophy into practice
and to reach a much wider audience is,
obviously, a much greater challenge.
Celebrity Interest

Celebrity interest in Issey Miyake brand clothing

has been prolific with rappers such as Jay-Z,
Twista, and Gorilla Zoe all mentioning the line in
their song lyrics. Additionally, the brand name has
appeared in music by Pet Shop Boys, on television
series such as HBO’s Entourage, and in the
Bourne Ultimatum (though the sweater worn by
Jason Bourne in the film is inside out).
