Technology is the application
of scientific knowledge for
practical purposes, especially
in industry.
Active Board/Touch Board/E-Board
It is also known as Interactive Whiteboard. It is a piece of
hardware that looks much like a standard whiteboard but it
connects to a computer and projector to make a very
powerful tool.
Using special software included with interactive whiteboard,
you can also interact with images and text projected on the
board.

utilized through the computer.
• Connection Panel: Connects your
computer through USB and VGA video
cables to the Active Board.

• Control Module: Provides you with


three buttons, right click, keyboard, and
settings.
• Eraser: Functions as an eraser for
writing done with a stylus.

• Stylus: Colored pens that can digitally


write on the Active Board.
Types of
Active Board
Pen-based, Infrared Board
These boards are usually the cheapest boards on the
market. They work by sticking special dongle onto an
existing whiteboard and use a battery-operated pen to
work,
Ex.MimioTeach, Interwrite Board
MimioTeach system is not like
conventional interactive whiteboards.
Instead of installing a large specialized
whiteboard screen you place the small
MimioTeach device on a conventional
whiteboard and use the stylus (pen) to
set up the system for use.
Features: Small magnetic Mimio bar
can be mounted on any whiteboard.
MimioTeach connects to USB port,
stylus pen is easy to hold. MimioStudio
software included access to
MimioConnect website for lessons.
Pen-based, Electro-magnetic Board
These boards use a mesh of copper wires on the board to get their
input. This means they don’t need a battery-operated pen, which
saves on buying batteries. However, these boards do not double-
up as normal dry-wipe boards, Neither can you interact with your
finger on them. They are also usually more expensive than the
boards above.
Ex. Promethean is one of the example of this type of board.
Promethean ActivBoard is a touch-
sensitive projection screen that
connects to a projector and computer
to display imges from the computer.
The 500 series allows for multiple users
(up to 4) to be at the screen at once,
using their pen to draw resize, rotate
and move objects on screen.
Features: 78-95” wide screen sturdy
construction. ActiveInspire software
included (compatible for use with
Microsoft Office applications).
Includes access to Promethean Planet
website with lesson plans additional
common core lessons software for
purchase.
Touch-based, Mesh Board
This type of board allows the user to interact with their
fingers as well as a pen. Some of them allow you to used dry
wipe markers on them too. They’re also reasonably priced.
Ex. Smart Board, Team Board, Trace Board, IQ Board
SMARTBoard is an interactive whiteboard that allows teachers
to project and write on the same screen. The SMARTBoard is
also touch-sensitive so teachers and students may used and also
connects to the computer and projector to display images from
the computer.
Features: Choose from 48-87”wide screen, pen tray to hold
writing pens or any writing tool. Notebook software is included
(basic whiteboard tools) access to SMART Exchange website
with learning sources.
Touch based Infrared Board
These boards have all the features of the above type board just use a
different technology. A lot of these boards are also magnetic, which
is useful. Dry wipe markers can be used on these.
Ex. Hitachi, Star Board, InTech Board
Hitachi Interactive whiteboard is specially built for classroom
settings. It is integrated with low-glare display technologies to
ensure minimal reflection during presentations. It comes with a
powerful electronic pen that can be used to directly navigate
trhough your presentation, as well as your computer, straight from
where the board is positioned.
Advantages and
Disadvantages
of using Active Board
Advantages
•Students like the interaction.
•Teachers like being able to clearly demonstrate or
explain something.
•Students learn about technology.
•Students haven open access to educational games or a
large scale.
•Teachers can use interactive whiteboards in most
lessons.
•Accommodates all learning styles.
•Suitable for all ages.
•Presentation of learning material is improved.
•Teacher planning effectiveness is improved.
•Teacher can manipulate objects in direct response to
student inquiry.
Disadvantages
•Difficulty in setting up and keeping board in alignment.
•Additional training is necessary.
•Lesson plan preparation time is increased.
•Interactive Whiteboards tend to be PC friendly not MAC
friendly.
•Expensive.
•Require specific software.
•Touch sensitive board has limitations, sometimes is not
sensitive enough.
