UNIT 22 – UNDERSTAND THE FEATURES

OF SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION

BY SHEA DOHERTY
WHAT IS SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION

• The single-camera setup, or single-

camera mode of production, also
known as Portable Single Camera, is a
method of filmmaking and video
production. The single-camera setup
originally developed during the birth of
the classical Hollywood cinema in the
1910s and has remained the standard
mode of production for cinema.
CRIME

• The crime genre deals with crime and

all its forms . There detection, criminals
and there motives. Some examples of
crime genre is the Irishman,
goodfellas, the godfather and se7en.
Crime movies usually is gritty and dark
like these.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE - CRIME
• A linear story is the most used kind of story the
kind that goes in one start of the film to the end
of the film with out any interrupters. You see the
story play out as you watch it.

• In this example (top boy). We focus on an x drug
kingpin Deshane who goes back to his way of
crime. In a attempt to get his title back top boy.
On the other side we see the rival gang how is
fight Deshane all in real time (Linear)

Narrative structures: realist

The realist part of top boy is its based on real events. Its based on the
gang activity the east London. This also what makes it so appealing to
My example – top boy
the public.
SOUND:

• Probably the second most important aspect in movies is sound
other than the image its self sound is what creates emotion
and tension sound that’s in the film is what tells you what's
happening. Music is what gives real emotion to a scene. Jolly
music makes the scene sad and sad music make the scene sad
ect.
LIGHTING
lighting is a film technique that goes beyond the standard three-
point lighting setup to add drama, depth, and atmosphere to the
story. Cinematic lighting utilizes lighting tricks like bouncing light,
diffusing light, and adjusting color temperatures

• lighting in film is important as it sets the mood

in the scene. It can make happy scenes happier
and sad scenes more sad.
• For example crime movies usually have low
lighting to make it darker this is to give it a dark
gritty atmosphere. But a comedy movie would
be more bright as it gives a more happy relaxing
atmosphere.
SINGLE CAMERA TV SHOW
CAMERA

• The Office was filmed with a single-camera setup in a

‘cinéma verité’ allowing the look of an actual
documentary, with no studio audience or laugh track,
allowing its "deadpan" and "absurd" humour to fully come
across. The primary vehicle for the show is that a camera
crew has decided to film the office and its employees,
seemingly around the clock. The presence of the camera is
acknowledged by the characters, especially Michael Scott,
who enthusiastically participates in the filming.
