Introduction
While brainstorming about the group presentation for today’s
lecture, the group thought that why not take a site to which
all the people can relate to? So we finally came to the
decision that we must take Ajanta and Ellora caves as the
topic. We hope that most of you have visited these caves as
they attract huge numbers of tourists from all around the
world!
We welcome you all and hope that this presentation becomes
fruitful and educational for you.
History of the caves
We all know that ancient structures in India have a rich history. So
let us understand the history of the caves before going into
technical things.
The Ajanta Caves are 30 (approximately) rock-cut Buddhist cave
monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about
480 CEin Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India.
Ellora caves (34) are a group of Hindu, Buddhist and Jainrock
cut caves.
These caves were declared as a World Heritage Site in 1983
when the first round of recognition was done by UNESCO in
India.
Ancient technology of India
That was a short review of theAjanta and Ellora cave’s history.
Now let us look at the structural aspect of the monument:
The structures were rock-cut which means that they
were constructed from top-to-bottom. Rock-cut
architecture is the creation of structures, buildings, and
sculptures by excavating solid rock where it
naturally occurs.
This means that the Civil engineers at that time had to plan
a building from top-to-bottom! They also used rocks which
naturally occurred only.
Proving ancient technology right!
The technology itself proves it’s worthiness in the following ways:
1. It has, until now, been able to survive the ravages of time i.e.
Earthquakes, thunderstorms, and other factors responsible for
deterioration of structures.
2. It has gone past the capabilities of today’s technology i.e.
Cement and other mixes.
3. It has been able to live for more than 19 centuries now which
is an impossible task for today’s engineers.
4. Their thinking was right as they made structures in stone as I
believe “Stone came on Earth when Earth came in existence and
will die when the Earth will.”
Reviving the technology
After understanding the above theory you must have thought
that then why don't we use the ancient technology. Some
reasons are: cost, time, lack of understanding etc...
Here we now come to learn that we must revive the old
technology to support sustainable development of the
world.
Also using this technology we will then be able to create
structures which live longer. This technology shows that
we need to go with the nature.
Major tourist spot
As it is a well known fact that Ajanta and Ellora caves attract a
lot of tourists in India which signifies the importance of the
structure. To talk in numbers Tourist turnout increased from
10,000 on weekends last year to 18,000 this year.
From structures such as this, we get to know that buildings
also attract a lot of people.
Many schools, companies and engineers come to visit these
caves as the caves give new learning. Ellora caves are famous
for their sculptures and Ajanta caves are famous for it’s
paintings more than sculptures.
Opportunities in Civil Engineering
Looking at the above discussed data we can see a lot of scope
in our field.
We see that structures can be a good source of income
and that they can inspire the world.
We are in a field where we do not save the life of one
but of millions. Our structures are responsible for the lives
of many people.
Structures can also be an asset to the nation as Ajanta and
Ellora caves are. These can be a matter of pride for the
nation and might contribute to the total GDP of the nation
by attracting tourists in huge numbers.
