A tour to Chennai

Introduction

 Chennai is located on the northern part of the state of Tamil Nadu.


 It is the capital of Tamil Nadu
 It is one of the metropolitan cities in India

Location
History

 Chennai is stated to be an important contributor towards administrative,


military, and economic centre since the 1st century.
 The Pallava, the Chola, the Pandya, and Vijaynagar the noticeable dynasties
ruled over Chennai.
 During the 16th and 18th centuries, it was ruled by the Portuguese and
Frenchmen.
 Madras was the only Indian city which was attacked during the World War I.
 After India gained independence in 1947, Chennai became the capital of
Madras State. In 1969 Madras state was renamed as state of Tamil Nadu.
 In 2004, An 'Indian Ocean Tsunami' altered the coastline of Chennai
permanently, killing many and leaving thousands of hundreds homeless.
Attractions
Ripon Building

 The Ripon Building is the headquarters of the greater Chennai corporation


 It is a fine example of the Neoclassical style of architecture, a combination
of, Ionic and Corinthian.
 It was built during the British Raj by Loganatha Mudaliar and designed by
G.S.T. Harris
Guindy National Park

 Guindy National Park is a national park is a national park located in the area
of Guindy in Chennai.
 It is one of the few only national parks located inside a city
 It is the 8th smallest national park in India
 It was established in 1997
Semmozhi Poonga

 Semmozhi Poonga was the first botanical park in Chennai


 Some trees in this park are more than 100 years old
 The garden inaugurated on 24th November 2010 by then chief minister,
Dr.M. Karunanidhi.
 Many of the exotic plants in this garden were imported from countries like China and Thailand
 Located at the central business district of Chennai, the park attracts several visitor and film crews for filming in the location.
Fort St.George

 It was the first English fortress in India


 It was founded in 1644
 The fort currently houses the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and other
official buildings of the state
Marina Beach

 It is India’ largest beach and the world’s second largest beach


Chennai Central Railway Station
 It was built during the British Raj
 The original station was designed by George Harding and consisted of four
platforms
 It took another five years for the work to be completed, when the station
was modified further by Robert Fellowes Chisholm with the addition of the
central clock tower, Travancore 'caps' on the main towers, and other changes.
 It is now South India’s busiest railway station
Dakshina Chitra

 Dakshina Chitra is a living – history museum located in Tamil Nadu and


dedicated to south Indian heritage and culture.
 It was opened to the public on 14 December 1996.
 The museum was founded and is being managed by the Madras Craft
Foundation.
