BeOS
– BeOS is an operating system for personal computers first developed by Be
Inc. in 1991. It was first written to run on BeBox hardware. BeOS was built for
digital media work and was written to take advantage of modern hardware
facilities such as symmetric multiprocessing by utilizing modular I/O bandwidth,
pervasive multithreading, preemptive multitasking and a 64-bit journaling file
system known as BFS. The BeOS GUI was developed on the principles of clarity
and a clean, uncluttered design.
– The API was written in C++ for ease of programming. It has
partial POSIX compatibility and access to a command-line
interface through Bash, although internally it is not a Unix-derived operating
system.

FreeBSD Project

– FreeBSD is an operating system used to power modern servers,

desktops, and embedded platforms. A large community has
continually developed it for more than thirty years. Its advanced
networking, security, and storage features have made FreeBSD
the platform of choice for many of the busiest web sites and
most pervasive embedded networking and storage devices.
– FreeBSD is said to be fast, stable, and especially appropriate for
use as an Internet server or as a file server. FreeBSD supports all
major X Window desktops, such as KDE and GNOME.
FreeBSD Project
Hardware Requirements

Nemesis
– Nemesis is an operating system designed by the University of
Cambridge, the University of Glasgow, the Swedish Institute of Computer
Science and Citrix Systems.
– Nemesis was conceived with multimedia uses in mind. In
a microkernel environment, an application is typically implemented by a
number of processes, most of which are servers performing work on
behalf of more than one client. This leads to enormous difficulty in
accounting for resource usage. In a kernel-based system, multimedia
applications spend most of their time in the kernel, leading to similar
problems.
Nemesis
Hardware Requirements
– Processor: Intel Pentium III / AMD Athlon MP.
– Graphics: AMD Mobility Radeon 7500 64MB or NVIDIA
GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB.
– System Memory: 128 MB RAM.

Opal
– The Opal project is exploring a new operating system structure, tuned to the
needs of complex applications, such as CAD/CAM, where a number of
cooperating programs manipulate a large shared persistent database of objects.
In Opal, all code and data exists with in a single, huge, shared address space.
The single address space enhances sharing and cooperation, because addresses
have a unique (for all time) interpretation. Thus, pointer-based data structures
can be directly communicated and shared between programs at any time, and
can be stored directly on secondary storage without the need for translation.
This structure is simplified by the availability of a large address space, such as
those provided by the DEC Alpha, MIPS, HP/PA-RISC, IBM RS6000, and future
Intel processors.
Opal
Hardware Requirements
– Intel Core Processor
– 2 GB RAM
– 15 GB Hard Disk Space
