Type lines and

Pattern Area
When we interpret finger print
patterns so that we can specify
whether they are arches, loops or
whorls-A-L-W-we must first look for
and establish the boundaries for that
pattern.
What is pattern area?
The pattern area of a finger print
is that part which lies within the
area surrounded by the type
tines. It is the ridges inside this
area which we study in pattern
interpretation.
What is type lines?
Type /lines are the basic boundaries of
most fingerprints. They are formed by
ridges which run parallel, starting from
the lower corner or corners of the
pattern and flowing inward and
upward toward the edge of the pattern
area, where they diverge or separate,
then surround or tend to surround the
pattern area.
•But type lines are like other
friction ridges. They are not
always continuous and
unbroken
•Whenever the ridge that forms
a type lines ends suddenly, the
next ridge immediately outside
of it is taken as its continuation,
•When a type line bifurcates, the
outer branch of the bifurcation
is considered as the
continuation of the type line.

Topic # 2

Delta formation
•Delta is a point on the first ridge
formation at or directly in front
of the divergence of the type
lines.
