Definition
Narrative text is a series of stories from time to time
that is described gradually.
The theories are presented in the form of legends
and real-story taught, and fairy tales.
The Purpose of Narrative Text
The basic purpose of the narrative text is to
entertain and attract the reader by presenting stories
or events that have a conflicting problem and at the
end of the story there is a resolution (a happy or
even sadness)..
Generic Structure
# Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where
the characters of the story are introduced.(berisi
pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita
(siapa atau apa, kapan dan dimana)
# Complication : Where the problems in the story
developed. (Permasalahan muncul / mulai terjadi dan
berkembang)
# Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved.
Masalah selesai, secara baik “happy ending” ataupun buruk
“bad ending”.
Language Feature of Narrative Text:
– Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)
– Adverb of time (Once upun a time, one day, etc)
– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)
– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not
general. (Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, etc)
– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked,
etc)
– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said,”My
name is Snow White). The direct speech uses present tense.
Types of Narrative Text
1.Fable: Stories that describe the animals.Ex:Mousedeer and
crocodile,The Ants and the Grasshopper
2.Legend: The folklore that describes how the origin of a
place is happening.Ex:Sangkuriang,Malin Kundang
3.Fairy Tales: People's folk usually referred to as a tale or a
story of children who contains many keansiahban in the
figures of his story and often mangung a moral message.Ex:
Cinderella,Snow White.
4.People's folk: a story that is spoken to generate
hereditary so that it becomes part of the tradition of a
society.ex: Jaka tarub,keong mas.
5.Love Story: If the love story, more on the theme of
the story containing the struggle to get love for the
figure.ex:Layla Majnun,Romeo and Juliet.
6.Myth: This mythical story is much circulating in
society and is generally diagaped as a factual story.ex:
Nyai Roro Kidul
Example
Orientation
Once upon time, there was a beautiful girl called Cinderella. She lived with
her stepsisters and stepmother. They were very bossy. She had to do all the
housework.
Complication
One day an invitation to the ball came to the family. Her stepsisters did not
let her go, so Cinderella was very sad. The stepsisters went to the ball
without her.
Resolution
Fortunately, the good fairly came and helped her to get to the ball. At the
ball, Cinderella danced with the prince. The prince felt in love with her
then he married her. They live happily ever after.
