WHAT IS LANGUAGE POLICY?

 ITIS WHAT THE GOVERNMENT DOES EITHER


OFFICIALLY THROUGH LEGISLATION, COURT
DECISIONS OR POLICY TO DETERMINE HOW
LANGUAGES ARE USED, CULTIVATE
LANGUAGE SKILLS NEEDED TO MEET
NATIONAL PRIORITIES OR TO ESTABLISH THE
RIGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS TO USE
OR MAINTAIN LANGUAGES.
What is linguistic accommodation?

 It is the process by which participants in a conversation adjust their accent,


diction, or other aspects of language according to the speech style of other
participant.
Forms:
Accommodation most often takes the form of convergence, when a speaker
chooses a language variety that seems to fit the style of the other speaker.
Accommodation may take the form of divergence when a speaker signals
social distance or disapproval by using a language variety that differs from the
style of the other speaker.
Language Policy deals with

 Corpus Planning ( explained by the reporter already)


 Acquisition Planning - This is a type of language planning that is important in
Education. Choosing which languages will be used as medium for instruction is
particularly important in acquisition planning as one must not only learn
language but use it to learn. ( Cooper, 1998)
7 key Languages in Education Policy
 1. Access Policy – policy that students have equal and equitable
opportunities to take full advantage of their education.
 2. Personnel Policy – rules that govern human resources and related
situations or a guide to work towards acceptable outcomes and
objectives.
 3. Curriculum Policy – basis/bases for our pupils’ learning or official or
mandatory statement of what is to be taught to students
Types of Curriculum ( traditional, thematic, Programmed, Classical,
Technological
Types of Curriculum Design ( subject-centered design, learner-
centered, problem-centered design)
7 key languages
 4. Methodology and material policy – methods to be used in the classroom
practice or indirectly through conceptualization of language which underlie
the policy.
 5. Resourcing Policy – policy on fair hiring process, transparent to select the
right candidate on the basis of merit and relevance with the job.
 6. Community Policy – policies providing respectful experience for everyone
regardless of gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation,
disability or appearance.
 7. Evaluation Policy – evaluation principles, methods to examine the content,
implementation or impact of the policy. Policy which develop an
understanding of the merit, worth and utility of a policy. Identifying potential
gaps in the process, outlining areas for improvement.
Two Dimensions of Language Planning

 Corpus Planning – deals with norm selection and codification as in the writing
of grammars and the standardization of spelling.
 Status Planning – deals with initial choice of language including attitudes
toward alternative languages and the political implications of various
choices.( Bright 1992)
