Thematic

Teaching
• A strategy that connects all subject areas using a common “theme”.
• This theme is the topic of interest that provides the core for
activities.
• It helps learners see meaningful connections across disciplines or
learning areas (Subjects).
• More importantly, THEMES provide relevance for the learners by
drawing together concepts under one umbrella.
How to
make a
thematic
lesson
Key components
1. Theme
2. Grade Level
3. Objectives
4. Materials
5. Activities
6. Discussion Questions
7. Literature Selection
8. Assessment
Steps
• Choosing a theme
• Doing the research
• Design an essential question(s) relevant to the theme
• Designing instructional units and activities that guide
students in answering the essential question
Thematic Unit
• Thematic means that the same topic is
used to develop the teaching plan (Content
and Instruction ) for each of the different
subjects in which students are enrolled.
• Presented in this unit are two models in
presenting thematic units:
1. The integrated
multidisciplinary unit
• Addresses a single discipline
• Attempts to combine 2 or more disciplines into 1 single approach
• Draws related topics from multiple disciplines
• Related topics could be drawn from other disciplines to supplement the
content of the core.
• In the process, however, the disciplinal boundaries are still retained as
well as the disciplines identity.

2. The integrated
Interdisciplinary thematic unit
• It link the learning experience of students in many ways
to engage them fully in the learning.
• Help students find out what they need to know and what
they need to learn rather than expecting the teacher to
give it to them.
Friegberg (2000) points that interdisciplinary units can help achieve the
following objective:
1. Emphasize the process of learning.
2. Encourage students to work cooperatively.
3. Teach students to be independent problem solvers and thinkers.
4. Assist students to develop their own individual interest and learning styles.
5. Help students find out what they need to learn rather than always expecting
the teacher to give them.
Interdisciplinary Teaching tea
• Comprising the interdisciplinary teaching team on the school-based level could be two
to five teachers from different subject areas working together to plan the units of
study.
• Makabayan is interdisciplinary and its teaching teams handle the following areas
(Subjects)
• Social Studies
• Values Education
• Technology and Livelihood
• Music, Art, Physical Education and Health
Advantages of Thematic Unit
Connections
Variety within Learning
Classroom culture
Curriculum Advancements
Disadvantages of Thematic
Interest Issues
Content Issues
A turn with classroom culture
Inaccessible to some students due to cultural,
academic, or ability differences
Significance of Thematic Lea
 Newer concept in pedagogy.
 Powerful instructional method for integrating various
concepts in curriculum by daily life experience.
 Helps in promoting learning with understanding and
discourage rote learning.
