ELECTRIC FIELD AND
ELECTRIC FIELD LINES
Objectives:
• Describe an electric field as a region in
which an electric charge a force;
• Compare the direction of electric field and
the direction of electric force;
• Solve word problems relating to electric
field.
Electric Fields
An electric field is a region of space where
a charged object experiences a force due
to its charge.
PROCEDURE:
1.Set the test charge (black ball) into
positive. Place a positive point charge on
the left of test charge. Observe what
happens.
2.Record the data on the table below.
3.Set the test charge (black ball) into
positive. Place a negative point charge on
the left of test charge. Observe what
happens.
4.Record the data on the table below.
• Set the test charge (black ball) into
negative. Place a positive point charge on
the left of test charge. Observe what
happens.
• Record the data on the table below.
GUIDE QUESTION:
1.Differentiate the electric field lines of a
positive charge and a negative charge.
a) the field produced by a positive charge
points away from the charge;
b) the field produced by a negative charge
points toward the charge.
Field Lines
•Because there are two charges that move in
different directions in a field it has been
decided that Field Lines should show the
direction that a POSITIVE charge would
accelerate if placed in the field.
2.How are you going to describe the
direction of Electric force, if you set both the
source charge and test charge as positive?
-SAME with the direction of electric field.
3.How are you going to describe the
direction of Electric force, if you set both the
source charge and test charge as negative?
-The direction of electric force is OPPOSITE
to the direction of electric field.
4.How are you going to describe the
direction of Electric force, if you assign
source charge and test charge with opposite
charges?
- the direction of electric force is the same to
the direction of electric field.
• 5.How will you compare the direction of
electric field lines and direction of electric
force if the two charges are the same/
opposite?
• the test charge is positive, the electric
force experienced by the charge is the
same direction as electric field, and if test
charge is negative , the electric force and
electric field are in opposite directions.
Example # 1
A small charge (q = 6.0 x 10-3 C) is found in
a uniform E-field (E = 2.9 N/C). Determine
the force on the charge.
Example # 2:
• ELECTRIC FIELD OF A SINGLE POINT
CHARGE. Calculate the magnitude of the
electric field at a point which is 30 m to the
right of a point charge Q= 3.0 x 10 -6 C.
Worksheet time! copy and
answer
1. Charge Q acts as a point charge to create
an electric field. Its strength, measured a
distance of 30 cm away, is 40 N/C. The
magnitude of the charge is....
2. Find the electric field acting on a 2.0 C
charge if an electrostatic force of 10500 N
acts on the particle.
3. ELECTRIC FIELD OF A SINGLE POINT
CHARGE. Calculate the magnitude of the
electric field at a point which is 50 cm to the
right of a point charge Q= 76 nC.
