Codes and conventions of

music videos
The codes and conventions are the different techniques used to construct the
video. These techniques can either be technical of symbolic.

Technical is how the meaning is conveyed using equipment like different camera
angles and diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.

Symbolic is showing meanings beyond what you can actually see like different
facial expressions and mise-en-scene.

The different techniques help the audience to understand the difference in genre
so that they can become familiar with recognising the different conventions of
each genre. It also provides structure and ensures the video fits the lyrics.

The conventions vary between the genre of music but the general conventions of
them are they same like editing techniques, camera, mise-en-scene, the style and
sound.
Performance videos
When the video shows the actors mainly performing in the video. This style of
music video isn’t common as they aren’t very popular since target audiences
struggle to engage with the song and video. An example of a performance style
music video is cousins by vampire weekend

Narrative videos
Narrative music videos mainly follow a storyline. There are 2 types of narrative,
linear and non-linear. Linear starts the story, has a middle and then ends while a
non- linear doesn’t follow this. An example of a narrative style music video is
“sleep on the floor” by The Lumineers.

Mixture videos
A mixture music video consists of both narrative and performance aspects. By
using both it is more enjoyable to watch and is more interesting to the audience.
An example of a mixture music video is “Since U been gone” by kelly Clarkson.

Cameo Videos
A cameo music video has an artist or band feature in the narrative but doesn’t
perform.
