WHAT IS TORIC IOLs?
Toric IOLs IOL that correct astigmatism as well a
s nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Toric IOLs → hydrophobic acrylic

Toric IOLs have different powers in different

meridians of the lens, also have alignment
markings on the peripheral part of the lens
AVAILABLE TORIC IOLs
DEVELOPMENT TORIC IOLs
Limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) → small incisions
are made at opposite ends of the cornea, near
limbus.
→ reducing/ eliminating astigmatism.

In some cases — even when a toric IOL is used

— LRI may be needed after cataract surgery to
fully correct astigmatism.

But typically in such cases, the amount of

astigmatism remaining after implantation of
toric IOL is far less, LRI outcome is better
COMPARISON LRI and TORIC IOL
DIFFERENCE LRI and TORIC IOLs
LIMBAL RELAXING INCISIONS (LRI)

• Can correct astigmatism between 1 - 3 D

• May be a site of infectious keratitis
• Refractive result may change over time as the
cornea heals.
• Surgically induced astigmatism changes most
in 10 weeks after surgery, with little change
from 10 weeks - 3 years after surgery
TORIC IOLs

• Can correct astigmatism between 1 - 8 D

• Small rotations (<10 degree) don’t affect the
astigmatic power
• The astigmatic correcting effect is eliminated
if the IOL is rotated 30 degrees
• Toric IOLs show the greatest rotation in the
early postoperative period, and little rotation
after 1 week.
CALCULATOR TORIC IOLs
AFTER SURGERY

After surgery was on average

• 0.75 D lower in the TORIC IOLs groups than i
n the non-toric groups
• 0.37 D lower in the groups TORIC IOLs impla
ntation compared with LRI
RELATIVE EXCLUSION CRITERIA

• Irregular astigmatism
• Post refractive surgery
• Corneal dystrophies
• Corneal edema
• Problems encoutered during surgery (pupil
damage, posterior capsule integrity, vitreous
prolaps, poor IOL centration, zonular instability)
HOW TO IMPLANT TORIC IOLs?

• Marks patient's cornea that identify the locati

on of the most curved meridian the eye.
• When the toric IOL is implanted during
the cataract procedure, the surgeon rotates the
IOL so the markings on the IOL are aligned
with the markings on the cornea to insure
proper astigmatism correction
