Today we are going to do the following:

a.Identify regions under the normal curve

b.Shade the regions bounded by the given 𝒛 −
𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒔
Activity 1. Identifying and Shading Regions Under the
Normal Curve

• Draw a sketch of a normal curve.

• Draw a vertical line through the specific 𝒛 −
𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆𝐬 and shade the region.

1. 𝒛 = 𝟎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟏 4. 𝒛 = −𝟏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = −𝟐
2. 𝒛 = 𝟎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = −𝟏 5. 𝒛 = 𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟑
3. 𝒛 = 𝟏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟐 6. 𝒛 = −𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = −𝟑
Activity 2. Proportion of the Area Under the Normal
Curve

• Draw a sketch of a normal curve.

• Draw vertical lines through the specific 𝒛 −
𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆𝐬 − 𝟑, −𝟐, −𝟏, 𝟎, 𝟏, 𝟐, 𝟑
• Identify the area between the 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔
above and below the mean.
For example, between 𝒛 = 𝟎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟑
Activity 2. Proportion of the Area Under the Normal
Curve

1. and 4. 𝒛 = 𝟎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟏
2. and 5. 𝒛 = 𝟎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = −𝟐
3. and 6. 𝒛 = −𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟑
Exercises:
A. Use the 𝒛 − 𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 to find the area that
corresponds to each of the following:
1. 𝒛 = 𝟎. 𝟓𝟔
2. 𝒛 = 𝟏. 𝟑𝟐
3. 𝒛 = −𝟏. 𝟎𝟓
4. 𝒛 = −𝟐. 𝟏𝟖
5. 𝒛 = −𝟐. 𝟓𝟖
Exercises:
B. Do the indicated task

1. Explain why the proportion of the area to

the left of 𝒛 = −𝟐. 𝟓𝟖 is 49%?
2. Explain why the total area of the region
between 𝒛 = −𝟑 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟑 is .9974 or
99.74%?
Today we are going to;

1. Find areas between paired 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔

2. Find probabilities for the standard normal
random variable 𝒛, and
3. Express areas under the normal curve
using probability notation.
𝑷 𝒂 < 𝒛 < 𝒃 denotes that the probability
that the 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 is between 𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃.

𝑷 𝒛 > 𝒂 denotes that the 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 is

greater than 𝒂.

𝑷(𝒛 < 𝒂) denotes that the 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 is less

than 𝒂.
For example, denote the area
between 𝒛 = 𝟏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟐,

𝑷 𝟏 < 𝒛 < 𝟐 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟑𝟓𝟗

Here are the steps in Determining the Areas Under the
Normal Curve
1. Draw a normal curve.
2. Locate the given 𝒛 − 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒔 at the base
line.
3. Draw a vertical line through these values.
4. Shade the required region.
5. Consult the 𝒛 − 𝑻𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 to find the areas that
correspond to the given 𝒛 − 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒔.
6. Examine the graph and use probability notation to
form an equation showing an appropriate operation
to get the required area.
7. Make a statement indicating the required area.
Consider the following cases
Case 1.

When the area or the shaded region is

‘greater than 𝑧 ′
“at least 𝑧
‘more than 𝑧 ′
‘to the right of 𝑧 ′
‘above 𝑧′
Consider the following cases
Case 2.

When the area or the shaded region is

‘less than𝑧’ ‘not greater than 𝑧’

‘at most 𝑧’ ‘to the left of 𝑧’
‘no more than 𝑧’ ‘bel0w 𝑧’
Consider the following cases
Case 3.
Exercises:
1. Find the proportion of the area above 𝒛 = −𝟏.
2. Find the area greater than 𝒛 = 𝟏.
3. Find the area to the left of 𝒛 = −𝟏. 𝟓.
4. Find the area below 𝒛 = 𝟏. 𝟓.
5. Find the area between 𝒛 = −𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = −𝟏. 𝟓.
6. Find the area between 𝒛 = 𝟎. 𝟗𝟖 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟐. 𝟓𝟖.
7. Find the area between 𝒛 = −𝟏. 𝟑𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒛 = 𝟐. 𝟑𝟕.
Locating Percentile Under the Normal
Curve

Today we are going to;

1. Compute 𝐳 − 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬 when probabilities are given.

2. Locate the point under the normal curve.

Locating Percentile Under the Normal
Curvewhen we are given probabilities
There are 3 important things to remember
and we want to know their corresponding 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔.
• First, a probability value corresponds to an area under the
normal curve.
• Second, in the Table of Areas Under the Normal Curve, the
numbers in the extreme left and across the top are 𝒛 =
𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔, which are distances along the horizontal scale. The
numbers in the body of the table are areas or probabilities.
• Third, the 𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 to the left of the mean are negative
values.
Locating Percentile Under the Normal
Curve
Problem 1.
Find the 95th percentile of a normal curve.

Problem 2.
Find the upper 10% of the normal curve
Locating Percentile Under the Normal
Curve

Problem 3.
The results of a nationwide aptitude test in
mathematics are normally distributed with
𝝁 = 𝟖𝟎 and 𝝈 = 𝟏𝟓. What is the percentile
rank of a score of 𝟖𝟒?
