Definition
• Soil corrosion is a geologic hazard that affects buried
metals and concrete that is in direct contact with soil.
Affected facilities

Transmission &
Foundations Distribution cables
pipelines
Factors affecting corrosion

moisture degree of
pH resistivity temperature
content aeration
 Soil 1 and soil 4 have both
fine and Coarse particals.
 Soil 2 and 3 have a more fine
particals.
PI shows how much water is
retained in a soil sample.
Lower PI = More corrosive

Soil sample 1 and 4 have lower

PI than sample 2 and 3.

Soil sample 1 and 4 are more

corrosive than sample 2 and 3.
High moisture content = more
corrosive
Soil sample 1 and 4 are more
corrosive
High moisture content of soils is
known to have more influence
towards the corrosion dynamics
of soil corrosion.
50-60% is the optimum
moisture content for
maximum corrosion rate

soil corrosivity is not a directly measurable parameter.

Soil moisture is an important factor for corrosion rates in soils.

soil sample 1 and 4 has lower plasticity index and high water content.

The result of soil sample 2 is less corrosive to the pipeline

need to install mitigation systems on the pipeline in the area of where soil sample 1 and 4
were taken
