HANDLING OF

REFRIGERANT
AIKON JOSPEH U. UGOT
Handling Precautions for Refrigerant
 • Use personal protective equipment, such as side shield glasses, gloves,
and safety shoes, when handling refrigerant.
 Avoid skin contact with refrigerant because it may cause frostbite.
 Never heat a container to a temperature higher than 52 °C (125 °F).
Never apply direct flame or live steam to a container or valve.
 Never refill disposable cylinders with anything. The shipment of refilled
disposable cylinders is prohibited by DOT regulations.
 Never refill returnable cylinders without Chemours consent.
 Never use a lifting magnet or sling (rope or chain) when handling
containers. A crane may be used when a safe cradle or platform is used
to hold the container.
 Protect containers from any object that will result in a cut or other abrasion
in the surface of the metal.
 Never tamper with the safety devices in the valves or containers.
 Never attempt to repair or alter containers or valves.
Handling Precautions for Refrigerant
 and the pressure is at 0 psi before disassembling a system. Never force
connections that do not fit. Make sure the threads on the regulators or other
auxiliary equipment are the same as those on the container valve outlets.
 Keep valves tightly closed and valve caps and hoods in place when the
containers are not in use.
 Store containers under a roof to protect them from weather extremes.
 Always ventilate or test the atmosphere of an enclosed area before beginning
work. Many refrigerants which may be undetectable by human senses are
heavier than air and will replace the oxygen in an enclosed area causing loss
of consciousness.
 Refrigerant cylinders should never be filled over 80% of their capacity (liquid
expansion may cause the cylinder to burst).
 Always check for the correct operating pressure of the refrigerant used. Use
gauges to monitor the system pressure. ‘
 Ensure that all liquid refrigerant is removed.
 Inspect refrigerant cylinders regularly. Do not use the cylinders if they show signs
of rust, distortion, denting, or corrosion. Store cylinders secured and upright in
an area where they will not be knocked over or damaged.
PROPER STORING OF REFRIGERANT
 Ensure that all your cylinders be stored up right and are without risk of
tipping over.
 Refrigerant should be stored into a well ventilated area and temperatures
should NOT exceed over 125 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperate
becomes too hot pressure can build inside the container which could
cause the container to rupture. This could cause the release valve to fail
which could result in an explosion of the product.
 Ensure all Refrigerant containers/cylinders have pressure release devices to
avoid combustion and or explosions.
 Ensure there are no combustible or flammable materials nearby the
containers.
 Perform regular visual inspections of your cylinders to ensure that everything
is in good order.
 Limit the number of people who have access to your Refrigerant, as the
more people who have access the higher your chance of an incident. Also,
please keep out of reach of children.
Refrigerant can be dangerous, or it can be very safe. It is up to you to take the
per-cautions when storing your product. Well, that about covers storage
requirements for Refrigerant.
Safe disposal of refrigerant
 The refrigeration system in your old appliance may contain a
refrigerant not covered by EPA disposal regulations, or it may be
empty. If so, it's still a good idea to have it inspected and emptied --
if necessary -- by a certified disposal technician. The best way to
avoid confusion and potential environmental damage is to contact
the local waste facility and inquire about disposal procedures. Some
facilities employ an EPA-certified technician, and they may be able
to take the appliance as-is. If you're buying a new refrigerator of air
conditioner, the dealer will often remove the old one as a service.
