ALLIANCES
GLOBAL BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
• They are international organizations as they contain
international membership and surround geopolitical entities
that operationally go beyond a single nation state.
• Their membership is characterized by boundaries
characteristic to a defined and unique geography, such as
continents, or geopolitics, such as economic blocs.
• Most ROs tend to work alongside well-established
multilateral organizations such as the United Nations.
While in many instances a regional organization is simply
referred to as an international organization.
AIMS OF REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
• To foster cooperation and political and economic integration among states or
entities within a restrictive geopolitical boundary.
• They focus on the needs and capabilities of the economy of their particular
region and provide them development at par with the level of global
development.
• Countries with similar interests and needs are clubbed together in these
organizations and they grow together.
• It results in social and cultural development as well.
• These organizations promote peace and stability in their specified region.
IMPORTANT REGIONAL
ORGANIZATIONS
EUROPIAN UNION(EU)
• It comprises of 28 European countries.
• It aims to ensure the free movement of
people, goods, services and capital
within the internal market, enact justice
and home affairs and maintain common
policies on trade, agriculture & regional
development.
• It promotes peace and democracy in
Europe.
• It is headquartered at Brussels, Belgium.
COUNCIL OF EUROPE
• Founded in 1949, it has 47 member states &
covers approximately 820 million people.
• It is an international organization whose
stated aim is to uphold human rights &
democracy in Europe.
• The Council of Europe is an official United
Nations Observer.
• Its headquarters are in Strasbourg, France.
English and French are its two official
languages.
ORGANIZATION FOR SECURITY AND
COOPERATION IN EUROPE (OSCE)
• It is an international organization for peace and
human rights. Presently, it has 57 countries as its
members.
• Most of the member countries are from Europe, the
Caucasus, Central Asia and North America.
• The six official languages of the OSCE are English,
French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
• It is concerned with early warning, conflict
prevention, crisis management.
• The headquarters of OSCE are in Vienna, Austria.
NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY
ORGANIZATION (NATO)
• NATO also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an
intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North
American and European countries.
• NATO constitutes a system of collective defense
whereby its independent member states agree to mutual
defense in response to an attack by any external party.
• NATO's Headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium.
• NATO's mission is to protect the freedom of its
members. Its targets include weapons of mass
destruction, terrorism, and cyber attacks.
ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN
STATES (OAS)
• It was founded on 30 April 1948.
• It’s aim is to achieve an order of peace and
justice among the member nations, to promote
their solidarity, to strengthen their
collaboration, and to defend their sovereignty,
and their independence.
• The OAS's members are the 35 independent
states of the Americas.
• Headquartered in the United States' capital
Washington, D.C.
AFRICAN UNION (AU)
• AU consists of 55 member states and is located on the
continent of Africa.
• It was founded on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa.
• The African Union has just over 1 billion people.
• The primary languages include English, French, Arabic,
Swahili, Portuguese, Spanish and the languages of Africa.
• It aims to achieve greater unity, cohesion and solidarity
between the African countries, defend the sovereignty,
territorial integrity and independence of its Member
States.
ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN
NATIONS (ASEAN)
• ASEAN is a regional intergovernmental organization
comprising ten countries in Southeast Asia.
• It is involved in numerous international affairs, and
hosts diplomatic missions throughout the world.
• The ASEAN Secretariat is located at Jakarta,
Indonesia.
• It promotes intergovernmental cooperation and
facilitates economic, political, security, military,
educational, and sociocultural integration among its
members and other countries in Asia.
ARAB LEAGUE
• It is a regional organization of Arab states in and
around North Africa.
• Currently, the League has 22 members.
• It’s main goal is to “draw closer the relations
between member States and co-ordinate
collaboration between them, to safeguard their
independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a
general way the affairs and interests of the Arab
countries”.
• It’s headquarter is at Cairo, Egypt.
GULF COOPERATION COUNCIL
(GCC)
• It is a regional, intergovernmental, political and economic
union consisting of all Arab states of the Persian Gulf
except Iraq.
• The Charter of the GCC was signed on 25 May 1981.
• It’s objectives include:
• Formulating similar regulations in various fields such as
religion, finance, trade, tourism, etc.
• Fostering scientific and technical progress in industry,
mining, agriculture, water and animal resources.
• Establishing scientific research centers.
ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC
CONFERENCE
• It’s an Islamic organization which has 57 member states.
• The official languages are Arabic, English and French.
• It is headquartered at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
• It aims at promoting Islamic solidarity by coordinating
social, economic, scientific, and cultural activities.
• The conference pledges to eliminate racial segregation
and discrimination.
• Projects include the International Islamic News Agency,
the Islamic Development Bank, the Islamic Solidarity
Fund, and the World Centre for Islamic Education.
