MALARIA

By : CHARMAINE NDOU
WHAT IS MALARIA ?
● It makes people
thin
● It’s only found in
Africa
● It can not be
healed
● You get from
mosquitoes only
It is a disease
caused by a
plasmodium
parasite
transmitted by
the of an
infected
mosquito
Plasmodium parasite
Plasmodium - is a genus of
unicellular eukaryotes that
are obligate parasites of
vertebrates and insects

Parasite- an organism that

in an organism of another
species (host)
How do you get infected by this
disease?
● If you are bitten by an infection female
anopheles mosquitoes.
● It is not contagious therefore you can not
get it from physical contact with the person
who has it.
● You can get it through blood transfusions or
organ transplant
● Breast feeding
Anopheles mosquitoes
Only Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit
malaria and they must have been infected
through a previous blood meal taken from an
infected person. When a mosquito bites an
infected person, a small amount of blood is
taken in which contains microscopic malaria
parasites. About 1 week later, when the
mosquito takes its next blood meal, these
parasites mix with the mosquito’s saliva and
are injected into the person being bitten.
Symptoms:
Types of Malaria:
● Plasmodium falciparum
● Plasmodium malariae
● Plasmodium vivax
● Plasmodium ovale
● Plasmodium knowlesi
Effects in the body :
● Plasmodium malariae is a
parasitic protozoan that causes
malaria in humans. It is one of
several species of Plasmodium
parasites that infect humans,
including also Plasmodium
falciparum and Plasmodium
vivax.
Complications
Cerebral malaria-. If parasite-filled blood
cells block small blood vessels to your brain
(cerebral malaria), swelling of your brain or brain
damage may occur. Cerebral malaria may
cause seizures and coma.

Breathing problems-Accumulated fluid in

your lungs (pulmonary edema) can make it
difficult to breathe.

Organ failure- Malaria can cause your

kidneys or liver to fail, or your spleen to rupture.
Any of these conditions can be life-threatening. https://youtu.be/1v55yg0RfoY
How does Malaria affect our economy ?

The economic impact of malaria is

estimated to cost Africa $12 billion every
year. ... Malaria is bad for business: the
disease is responsible for employee
absenteeism, increased health care
spending, and decreased productivity,
all of which can negatively impact a
company's reputation.
Prevations
● Using insecticide treated nets - use these
nets to cover the sleeping areas. These
nets
● Spraying with DDT
Medication
● Combination of atovaquone and
proguanil (Malarone)
● Quinine sulfate (Qualaquin)
with doxycycline (Vibramycin,
Monodox, others)
● Mefloquine.
● Primaquine phosphate.
