Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND
• Coronaviruses are large family of viruses,
some causing illness in people and others that
circulate among animals (including camels,
cats, and bats).

• Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve and

infect people and then spread between people
such as has been seen with MERS and SARS.

• Both MERS and SARS have been known to

cause severe illness in people

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND

CDC believes at this time that symptoms of 2019-nCoV may appear in as

few as 2 days or as long as 14 after exposure. This is based on what has
been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

Department of Health, Philippines
BACKGROUND
• Does the new coronavirus affect older
people or younger people also
susceptible?

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND
• Many characteristics of this novel coronavirus and how it may
affect people are still unclear.
• According to WHO Situation Report 7 as of Jan 27:
• Median of cases outside of China is 45 years ranging 2 to 74 years old
• 71% of cases were male.
– People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
– Older people and people with pre-existing medical condition
(asthma, diabetes, heart dse) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming
severely ill with the virus.

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND
• According to WHO based on situation report #12:
– The main driver of transmission, based on current available data,
is symptomatic cases.
– WHO is aware of possible transmission of 2019-nCoV ARD from
infected people before developed symptoms.
– Thus, transmission from asymptomatic cases is likely not a major
driver of transmission.
– Person who are symptomatic will spread the virus more readily
through coughing and sneezing.

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND
• In France, for the first time outside China, a healthcare worker was
diagnosed as being ill with 2019-nCoV ARD.
• First instance of 3rd Generation human to human transmission
outside China has been identified in an individual who was exposed
to a confirmed case from the cluster in Bavaria, Germany.
• In Japan, a tour guide who is part of the same cluster of Japanese
cases who had contact with tourist from Wuhan; and in Thailand, a
taxi driver who had no travel history to China.

Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Program

BACKGROUND
• During the previous outbreaks due to coronavirus- MERS and SARS, human to
human transmission occurred through droplets, contact and fomites,
suggesting that the mode of transmission of the 2019-nCoV ARD can be
similar.

• To reduce the general risk of transmission:
