GLOBAL CITY
-an urban center that enjoys
significant competitive advantages
and that serves as a hub within a
globalized economic system. The
term has its origins in research
on cities carried out during the
1980s, it is also called world city
or sometimes alpha
city or world center.
ATTRIBUTES OF GLOBAL CITY
1. A variety of
international financial
services, notably in
finance, insurance,
real estate, banking,
accountancy, and
marketing.
2. Headquarters to large multinationals.
3. Active influence and participation in international events
and world affairs.
4. A fairly large population.
5. A major international airport
that serves as an established
hub for several
international airlines.
6. An advanced transportation system
that includes several freeways and/or
a large mass transit network offering
multiple modes of transportation

7. Centers of new ideas and


innovation in business, economics,
culture, and politics.
8. An advanced communications infrastructure on
which modern trans-national corporations rely.
9. World-renowned cultural
institutions, such as Museums
and Universities.
10. A lively cultural scene,
including film festivals (for
example the Toronto
International Film Festival),
premieres, a
thriving music or theatre scene.
11. Several powerful and influential media
outlets with an international reach.
12. A strong sporting community,
including major sports facilities,
home teams in major league
sports, and the ability and
historical experience to host
international sporting events
such as the Olympic Games.
