HALOGE

NS
HISTORY
 The name "halogen" means
"salt former", derived from the
Greek words halo ("salt") and -
gen ("formation").
PROPERTIES
Have seven valence electrons in their
highest-energy orbitals
 Tend to form anions having -1
charges, known as halides.
 Diatomic molecules
Extremely reactive
 Form compounds with carbon easily
FLOURINE
 The name of the
element is derived from
Latin word fluere, which
means“to flow”
13th most abundant
element
FLOURINE
 Fluorine gas is deadly. Breathing air with
only a small concentration of 0.1%
fluorine can cause death.
 It can be found in ores fluorite, cryolite
and fluorapatite.
 Used in toothpaste, and is often added to
municipal drinking water.
CHLORINE
 The name of the
element is derived
from the Latin word
for greenish-yellow,
chloros.
 20th most abundant
element
CHLORINE
It is found in the form of chloride
anions, Cl-, in the minerals halite,
sylvite, chlorargyrite and in
seawater.
Chlorine is found in bleaches and
cleaners
 Water – purification agent
BROMINE
 Dark – reddish brown
with extremely bad odor.
 The name "bromine" is
derived from the Greek
word for "stench," which
is bromos.
BROMINE
It is found as bromide ions in the
ore bromargyrite, in seawater, and
some natural sea-salt deposits and
brines
 Used in fire extinguishers and soil
fumigant to kill insects and bacteria
IODINE
 Forms dark, shiny,
purple crystals at
room temperature
 Toxic, but it is so
much less reactive
than the other
halogens
IODINE
 an antibacterial/antiseptic agent.
Ex. "Tincture of iodine", a solution of 3%
elemental iodine in a mixture of ethanol and
water, commonly used as a disinfectant for
cleaning wounds and sanitizing water.
Ex. Silver iodide, AgI, is light-sensitive, and
is used in photography; it is also used in seeding
clouds to promote the formation of rain.
ASTATINE
 The name of the element
is derived from from the
Greek word astatos, which
means "unstable."
It is the rarest naturally
occurring element on earth
ASTATINE
 The properties of astatine are not well
known because it breaks down too fast to
allow experiments that take more than a
few hours.
 Astatine has found uses in medicine
even though it is radioactive and decays
quickly.
TENNESSINE
 A synthetic chemical
element.
The second heaviest
known element
 Discovered in 2010 by
scientist from Dubna,
Russia and California
SUMMARY
 Fluorides are known chiefly for their addition
to public water supplies to prevent tooth
decay, but organic fluorides are also used as
refrigerants and lubricants.
 Chlorine is the best known of the halogen
elements. The free element is widely used as
a water-purification agent, and it is employed
in a number of chemical processes.
SUMMARY
 Iodine is most familiar as an antiseptic.
 Bromine is used chiefly to prepare bromine
compounds that are used in flame retardants
and as general pesticides. Astatine is the rarest
occurring in natural form element.
 Tennessine is the second heaviest known
element. There are still no uses for tennessine
for its properties are yet to unravel
