Differential Sticking (Wall Sticking)
Condition
P: Permeable Formation.

I: Insufficient String movement.

S: String in contact with filter cake.

T: Thick filter cake.

O: Overbalance.

L: Lack of circulation.
PERMEABLE FILTER
FORMATION CAKE
A CAKE OF MUD
SANDSTONE/ FRACTURED
SOLIDS DEVELOPS
LIMESTONE. ON THE HOLE
WALL DUE TO
FLUID LOSS.
HIGH FLUID LOSS
OVER INCREASES FILTER
CAKE THICKNESS.
BALANCE
WELLBORE PRESSURE
GREATER THAN THICK FILTER
FORMATION PRESSURE CAKE INCREASES
STICKING
POTENTIAL
STRING STATIC
CONTACTS FILTER CAKE
STATIC FILTER CAKE
FILTER CAKE INCREASES CAKE
ANGLED WELLBORE/ THICKNESS.
UNSTABILISED BHA
THE STATIC FILTER
INCREASES
CAKE SEALS HSP
POTENTIAL.
FROM THE BACK SIDE
OF PIPE.
STRING DIFFERENTIAL FORCE
MOTION BEGINS TO DEVELOP.

STOPPED
NO STRING MOTION OR
CIRCULATION
DEVELOPS STATIC
CAKE.
LOW TIME
PRESSURE DEPENDENT
AREA WITH TIME, THE AREA OF
PIPE SEALED IN THE
AN AREA OF LOW FILTER CAKE
PRESSURE INCREASES.
DEVELOPS
BETWEEN THE PIPE & IMMEDIATE ACTION IS
FILTER CAKE REQUIRED TO FREE THE
DRILL STRING.
OVERBALANCE
PRESSURE ACROSS
THE CONTACT AREA
DETERMINES THE
DIFFERENTIAL
FORCE.
CAUSE:
DRILL STRING CONTACTS A
PERMEABLE ZONE.
WHEN STRING MOVEMENT STOPS, A
STATIC FILTER CAKE DEVELOPES.
HIGH OVERBALANCE APPLIES A
DIFFERENTIAL STICKING FORCE TO THE
DRILL STRING CONTACT AREA.

WARNING:
PROGNOSED LOW PRESSURE SANDS.
LONG/UNSTABILISED BHA SECTIONS.
INCREASING O/PULL, SLACK OFF
WEIGHT OR TORQUE TO START STRING
MOVEMENT.

INDICATIONS:
OCCURS AFTER A PERIOD OF NO
STRING MOVEMENT.
STRING CAN NOT BE ROTATED
OR MOVED.
CIRCULATION UNRESTRICTED.

FIRST ACTION:
APPLY TORQUE & JAR DOWN
WITH MAXIMUM TRIP LOAD.
SPOT A PIPE RELEASING PILL IF
THE STRING DOES NOT JAR
FREE.
PREVENTATIVE ACTION:
MAINTAIN MINIMUM REQUIRED
MUD WEIGHT.
KEEP STRING MOVING WHEN BHA
IS OPPOSITE SUSPECTED ZONES.
MINIMISE SEEPAGE LOSS IN LOW
PRESSURE ZONES.
MINIMISE UNSTABILISED BHA
SECTIONS, USE SPIRAL DC’S &
HWDP.
CONTROL DRILL SUSPECTED
ZONES.

Spotting Pills
• Prepare the pill as soon as possible.
• Use 50% excess.
• If stuck point is unknown then cover the
complete open hole section.
• Pills should be 0.02 S.G. over the mud
weight.
• Spot the pill in maximum rate possible
leaving a reserve volume in side the pipe.
• Work pipe once the pill is spotted.
• Allow a minimum of 12 hrs for the pill to
work.
• Differential stuck pipe can also occur
opposite the drill pipe . If none of the above
work consider backing off and using a wash
over string.
• Backing off and using a DST tool to reduce
hydrostatic head.
• Pills remove filter cake so be as alert for
increase losses or well control problems.

ledging Limestone

In any one well problems may exist. For

squeezing example an increase in weight may be
required to control cavings back up the
Salt hole .may cause differential below.
