Gay-Lussac’s Law
Gay-Lussac’s Law

Aside from Boyle’s and Charles’

Laws, there is another gas law
that you need to be familiar
with. Have you ever wondered
how temperature affects the
pressure of the gas at constant
volume?

Gay-Lussac’s Law

Gay-Lussac's law states
that the pressure of a given
mass of gas varies directly
with the absolute
temperature of the gas,
when the volume is kept
constant.

Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac (1746 – 1823)

The Person who Credited with

the determination of the
temperature-pressure
relationship in gases at
constant volume is Joseph
Louis Gay-Lussac. He deduced
that the pressure of the gas is
directly proportional to its
temperature.

Gay-Lussac’s Law

This means that when the

temperature of gases increases its
pressure also increases or vice versa.
Hence, we can state the Gay-Lussac’s
Law as: At constant volume, The
pressure of a fixed mass of gas is
directly proportional to the absolute
temperature.

Gay-Lussac’s Law Formula
Since there is a
direct
proportionality
between the
pressure and
temperature of
gases at constant
volume, it can be
shown in this
equation.
