SEIZURE

DISORDER
SEIZURE VS EPILEPSY
O Abnormal discharge of O syndrome of two or more
electrical energy in unprovoked or recurrent
certain brain cells. seizures on more than
one occasion
O Discharge spreads to
nearby cells and the
effect may be loss of
consciousness,
involuntary movements
or abnormal
phenomena.
SYMPTOMS
O temporary confusion
O A staring spell
O Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and
legs
O Loss of consciousness or awareness
O Psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety or deja vu
CAUSES
O Hypoxia
O Hypoglycemia
O Infections
O Metabolic Disorders
O Genetic Influence
O Head Trauma

FOCAL AND GENERALIZED
SEIZURES
O Complex Partial O Generalized tonic-clonic
Seizure (psychomotor) (grand mal) seizure

O Simple Partial Seizure O Absence Seizure


(petit mal)
FOCAL SEIZURES
COMPLEX PARTIAL SEIZURE
O The child may smack her lips, walk around aimlessly
or shout.
O He/she may be conscious but is not actually aware
of his/her behavior.

O DURATION: last for 2-5 mins.


SIMPLE PARTIAL SEIZURE
O Sudden jerking motions with no loss of
consciousness.

O FREQUENCY: may occur weekly, monthly or only


once or twice a year.
GENERALIZED SEIZURES
GENERALIZED TONIC-CLONIC
SEIZURE (GRAND MAL)
O Muscles become stiff, loses unconsciousness, legs
and arms may jerk and falls to the floor.
O The entire body shakes violently, saliva may be forced
from the mouth

O DURATION: last for 2-3 mins.


O FREQUENCY: may occur several times a day or as
seldom as once a year.
ABSENCE SEIZURE
(PETIT MAL)
O The child might nod, blink or stop an activity.
O The lapses are so brief and often go unnoticed.

O DURATION: lasting for a few seconds to half a minute


or so.
O FREQUENCY: as often as 100 times per day
When to see a doctor
O The seizure lasts more than five minutes.
O Breathing or consciousness doesn't return after the
seizure stops.
O A second seizure follows immediately.
O You've injured yourself during the seizure.
MEDICATIONS
O Antiepileptic drugs (AED)

O SIDE EFFECTS OF AED:


O Fatigue, nausea, slurred speech, lack of
appetite and thickening of gums
FIRST AID FOR GENERALIZED
TONIC-CLONIC SEIZURES
O Keep Calm. Reassure the other children that the
child will be fine in a minute.

O Ease the child gently to the floor and clear the area
around him of anything that could hurt him.

O Put something flat and soft under his head so it will


not bang against the floor as his body jerks.
O Turn him gently onto his side. This keeps airway
clear and allows any fluid in his mouth to drain
harmlessly away.

O When the jerking movements stop, let the child


rest until full consciousness returns.
