The Role of Psychiatric Nurse and

Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Wida Kuswida Bhakti
The Aims of this subject are the student will:
 Describe psychiatric nurses role
 Explain interdisciplinary collaboration
Background
 Managed care is based on a health (rather than illness)
paradigm.
 increases client access to appropriate (mental health)
services.
 cost effectiveness through the development of clear
boundaries with regard to targeting, planning and
delivering needed (mental health) services.
 quality control through a utilization review process.
 availability of a choice of providers based on the type
of care required (ANA, 1993).
 Support for a meaningful participation of consumers
and families in the redesign, implementation,
evaluation, and monitoring of the managed care
system is encouraged (NAMI, 1995).
Psychiatric nurses must be
registered and have
a nursing license, and on-the-job
training is also usually required.
 Psychiatric nurses provide
medical care to patients who
have mental health issues.
 They often work in hospitals or
facilities that treat people
with mental health problems.
Psychiatric unit nurses care for
patients with illness or disease
that has led them to temporary
or long-term hospitalization.
They are responsible for direct
care of a set of patients,
facilitating their recovery
through social interaction and
traditional therapies.
 Psychiatric unit nurses are
usually assigned a caseload of
patients and provide direct
care to their patients, which
includes facilitating social and
emotional needs, supervising
medication schedules and
evaluating patient
The role of the registered nurse in a
psychiatric unit is
 to provide essential teaching,
(Teaching is an essential nursing
function which helps patients to
better understand
their mental illnesses and
treatments.)
 promote therapeutic
communication, and

and support.

responsible for planning and
providing support and medical
and nursing care to people
who have a range of mental
health issues.

people with issues ranging
from anxiety and depression
to personality and
eating disorders or addiction
to drugs or alcohol.
 The interdisciplinary care
plan is a strategy that is
developed based on data
gathered during patient
assessment.
 This care plan determines
the needs of the patient and
establishes protocols to
meet those needs.
 The objective of the plan is
offer patient care in a
seamless continuum.
 An interdisciplinary approach
relies on health professionals
from different disciplines, along
with the patient, working
collaboratively as a team.
 The most effective teams share
responsibilities and promote
role interdependence while
respecting individual members'
experience and autonomy.
 The purpose of
the interdisciplinary team is
to foster frequent, structured,
and documented
communication among
disciplines to establish,
prioritize and achieve
treatment goals. ...
 A licensed or certified
therapist from each discipline
involved in treating the
patient.
 All disciplines involved in
the care of a patient
collaborate to develop the
patient'splan of care.
 Each healthcare team
member provides input into
the plan of care.
 The patient/family/significant
other is included in the
development,
implementation,
maintenance, planning, and
evaluation of
the care provided.
 Benefits
of interprofessional
collaboration—for nurses,
other healthcare
professionals, and
patients—include
improved patient
outcomes, fewer
preventable errors,
reduced healthcare costs,
and improved relationships
with other disciplines
